Round Anglesey for Macmillan Cancer Support - April 19th 2014

2014 Annual Anglesey run is on again. April 19th.

Three castles, two bridges, Snowdon, numerous Islands and Lighthouses including South Stack, Two piers, great compay and some of Wales's finest scenery all in one day! Then the annual evening bash as always.

Can we get over 30 boats this year?

To launch, Chris Seddon (Chris Ty Calch on here) in Caernarfon can host a lot of you with Tractor launch at all states of tide, with trailer storage. His number is 07917 859345 Ty Calch, Llanfaglan, Caernarfon LL545RA

:speedboat:
10.30 am set off from Caernarfon (Chris Ty Calch's slip) High Water is 11.10 here.
Head up the Menai Strait (picking up me at Beaumaris Pier :D)to Conwy Castle (30 miles) where we can go up the river a little past the castle, then all tie up for a natter/beer/coffee and some chips on the front. High Water here is 12.10

:bolt:Then we can head back round Anglesey to Caernarfon (60 miles) with the falling tide. If the weather is bad on the exposed Northerly side, or smaller boats want a slightly shorter distance home, they can head back through the Menai Strait. If we need shelter for re-fuelling etc we can drop in at Caernarfon, but no petrol is available. For info, most boats use circa 1-1.5L of fuel per mile, so carry enough!

Chris is looking in to an evening do again, I'm hoping a hog roast and pics from the day again like 2012, thread to come!

So who is in?.........

I'm going so the weather will be crap, you'll be right at home! We need your experience. Whilst I've been boating for over 30yrs, I've only been out twice. ;)

put me down for this one. i normally start at holyhead, but may for this one drive across the island and set off from the straits, i will decide closer to the time. a friend of mine has said he fancies doing a run to conwy so this may be the perfect opportunity for him to do it in relative safety.

There is a campsite near Chris's yard and then a travel inn/hotels/b and b etc in Caernarfon which is a walk up the road. Re the boats, Chris is your best bet to contact.

It was an impressive 007 overboard with knife in teeth exercise, executed so swiftly nobody even noticed!! I'd have faffed about desperately trying to flag down some unsuspecting dry suited up foolhardy youngster, probably off Rib Tickler, there were plenty of them around!

Welcome aboard! It's the 4th year we have done it, weather can be inclement but with the island there is always a good run to be had and there is safety in numbers. Ensure you research what you should take with you on a cruise, be self sufficient in all aspects, plenty of threads on here to help you.

HUMBER P4VWL 13 November 2013 10:46

If you don't have the fuel capacity, the run from Caernarfon to Conwy and back, up and down the strait is about 60miles in total. A good run for most, but many who make the trip to NWales want to "Go round the Island" navigating places like Carmel Head, The Skerries, The Stacks etc as well as the infamous Strait itself and "The Swellies". Reputedly the 2nd most dangerous stretch of water after The Needles. (??)

simsy 13 November 2013 12:05

Mental? 4.1m 30hp....

Maybe.

I will do it again, but may not bother if as rough as 2013.... My crew had to had a hot bath at 3am the following morning because of the pain...

Is a walk in the park on a calm day...

Warning to other small RIBs.... They will not wait for you....

Campered to the bleek north of the Island in 2013 the Swellies felt like heaven on the way back home....

Trudat. We were running with you til about Treadur Bay where we wussed out. Would really like to make it round the island this year but our max fuel capacity is prolly about 130litres with jerries. at a nice steady 20 knot cruise in nice weather we'd be fine. If it's sh!tty again we might struggle but going to give it a bash!

Btw say hi to Stormin Norman for us. We were sat with him at Fu's last year; good lad.

HUMBER P4VWL 13 November 2013 12:45

To be fair, re waiting, we normally end up cruising in groups of similar sizes, but when weather turns nasty a 7m just can't cruise with a 4m, he'd be at displacement speed and use all his fuel.

People should be self sufficient, that is the rule, fog can split eveyone up for example.

However the safest way is to buddy up with a similar boat!!

Dan Gurney 13 November 2013 12:53

I wasn't complaining! Just concurring with m'colleague. Totally agree about self sufficiency, which is why we turned back last year. I took the decision that we weren't enjoying it, couldn't keep up, I wasn't confident going round on my own. This year we have a few hundred nautical under our belts so it's a diff kettle of ball games. (though I may still wuss out if I'm not enjoying myself). :whistling:

nugent 13 November 2013 12:54

Guess I can adapt sumat to carry anther 90 ltr s deck so I can run as. Fast as I wish or conditions allow

Realistically what would people red with 200 hp,lump Did Moerfer n back to,port dinorwic on approx 60 ltrs this year and was not exactly hanging around

HUMBER P4VWL 13 November 2013 13:01

Most use 1-1.5l per mile. More for bigger boat/engine and 2s vs 4s.

Tim&Linda 13 November 2013 13:17

"Hi Guys, Only weekends in April and May that is awkward for us, are the 26/27th April and the 17/18th May. Simply because on those weekends its Spring tides, and the High water time means we would not be able to use the foreshore as a setting down area for arriving boats (and leaving trailers once launched). The car park as most of you know is fairly small (50cars) so with the prospect of 20 or so Large RiBs and tow vehicles arriving all for a 10am launch not to mention any other craft, it would simply be chaos. Looks like I need to have a word with your better half she will go mad when she finds out what you've done to a fellow Wulfrunian ... God help you now :D

That's sorted then. Accommodation booked for Friday through Sunday night. Gives a day for the hangover to wear off before having to drive (crawl) home on Bank Hoiday Monday.

Hope to be there again for a great crack and hopefully some good boating too.
Been down about 10 miles past Caernarfon but you need the tide and stay In the channel.
Popped in the pub for a quick drink too on the front, had to be done.

Excellent Indy, glad you're coming.

I assume you mean Conwy?! I believe you can go 8 miles up to the bridge, unless you have VERY shallow draught. The quay is great at high tide. Tie up to the wall and have a pint and chips.

Don't you get fed up of cruising around the same place HP ?

Well said.
.... Once I've done ALL the pubs around Anglesey by boat, I'll move on to territories new! I reckon I've only done about 1/3.

Yes, Conwy, must be getting over excited already. Sure GPS said it was further than that but might be wrong.
Can't imagine the view if there were 2 dozen plus ribs going for a quick potter down a couple of miles and mooring up outside the pub!

if your talking about the pub next to the iron bridge over the river at Tal-Y-Cafn I've got some bad news for you, it's shut :( but there are plenty of nice pubs in Conwy n gud fish n chips too

Good work! Best to avoid that midge infested land when you can. ;)

Glad you're coming along, looks like a big turnout again from all over the country!! Incredible really how many people come from so far afield. :)

Looks great. We've launched from Chris's before. Do you all tend to stay at same campsite? If so which one?

2014 Annual Anglesey run is on again. April 19th. Three castles, two bridges, Snowdon, numerous Islands and Lighthouses including South Stack, Two piers, great compay and some of Wales's finest scenery all in one day! Then the annual evening bash as always. Can we get over 30 boats this year? To launch, Chris Seddon (Chris Ty Calch on here) in Caernarfon can host a lot of you with Tractor launch at all states of tide, with trailer storage. His number is 07917 859345 Ty Calch, Llanfaglan, Caernarfon LL545RA :speedboat: 10.30 am set off from Caernarfon (Chris Ty Calch's slip) High Water is 11.10 here. Head up the Menai Strait (picking up me at Beaumaris Pier :D)to Conwy Castle (30 miles) where we can go up the river a little past the castle, then all tie up for a natter/beer/coffee and some chips on the front. High Water here is 12.10 :bolt:Then we can head back round Anglesey to Caernarfon (60 miles) with the falling tide. So who is in?.........

. Great idea. Ribtickler will be there
