Round Anglesey for Macmillan Cancer Support - April 19th 2014
2014 Annual Anglesey run is on again. April 19th.
Three castles, two bridges, Snowdon, numerous Islands and Lighthouses including South Stack, Two piers, great compay and some of Wales's finest scenery all in one day! Then the annual evening bash as always. Can we get over 30 boats this year? To launch, Chris Seddon (Chris Ty Calch on here) in Caernarfon can host a lot of you with Tractor launch at all states of tide, with trailer storage. His number is 07917 859345 Ty Calch, Llanfaglan, Caernarfon LL545RA :speedboat: 10.30 am set off from Caernarfon (Chris Ty Calch's slip) High Water is 11.10 here. Head up the Menai Strait (picking up me at Beaumaris Pier :D)to Conwy Castle (30 miles) where we can go up the river a little past the castle, then all tie up for a natter/beer/coffee and some chips on the front. High Water here is 12.10 :bolt:Then we can head back round Anglesey to Caernarfon (60 miles) with the falling tide. If the weather is bad on the exposed Northerly side, or smaller boats want a slightly shorter distance home, they can head back through the Menai Strait. If we need shelter for re-fuelling etc we can drop in at Caernarfon, but no petrol is available. For info, most boats use circa 1-1.5L of fuel per mile, so carry enough! Chris is looking in to an evening do again, I'm hoping a hog roast and pics from the day again like 2012, thread to come! So who is in?......... |

put me down for this one. i normally start at holyhead, but may for this one drive across the island and set off from the straits, i will decide closer to the time. a friend of mine has said he fancies doing a run to conwy so this may be the perfect opportunity for him to do it in relative safety.

If you don't have the fuel capacity, the run from Caernarfon to Conwy and back, up and down the strait is about 60miles in total. A good run for most, but many who make the trip to NWales want to "Go round the Island" navigating places like Carmel Head, The Skerries, The Stacks etc as well as the infamous Strait itself and "The Swellies". Reputedly the 2nd most dangerous stretch of water after The Needles. (??)
|
Mental? 4.1m 30hp....
Maybe. I will do it again, but may not bother if as rough as 2013.... My crew had to had a hot bath at 3am the following morning because of the pain... Is a walk in the park on a calm day... Warning to other small RIBs.... They will not wait for you.... Campered to the bleek north of the Island in 2013 the Swellies felt like heaven on the way back home.... |
Quote:
Btw say hi to Stormin Norman for us. We were sat with him at Fu's last year; good lad. |
To be fair, re waiting, we normally end up cruising in groups of similar sizes, but when weather turns nasty a 7m just can't cruise with a 4m, he'd be at displacement speed and use all his fuel.
People should be self sufficient, that is the rule, fog can split eveyone up for example. However the safest way is to buddy up with a similar boat!! |
I wasn't complaining! Just concurring with m'colleague. Totally agree about self sufficiency, which is why we turned back last year. I took the decision that we weren't enjoying it, couldn't keep up, I wasn't confident going round on my own. This year we have a few hundred nautical under our belts so it's a diff kettle of ball games. (though I may still wuss out if I'm not enjoying myself). :whistling:
|
Guess I can adapt sumat to carry anther 90 ltr s deck so I can run as. Fast as I wish or conditions allow
Realistically what would people red with 200 hp,lump Did Moerfer n back to,port dinorwic on approx 60 ltrs this year and was not exactly hanging around |
Most use 1-1.5l per mile. More for bigger boat/engine and 2s vs 4s.
|
i can get a hog roast and a pig sorted if need be
|
Can you contact Chris Tim! Good work.

The other problem is i can't do 26/27th April and 17/18th May has a low tide at mid day. Plus we have 21 boats committed to 19th now already  We could shift to 20th as it is bank holiday monday. The Loch Lomond boys are back on the 19th, but not sure if they would then come????? |

Hope to be there again for a great crack and hopefully some good boating too.
Been down about 10 miles past Caernarfon but you need the tide and stay In the channel. Popped in the pub for a quick drink too on the front, had to be done. |
Quote:
I assume you mean Conwy?! I believe you can go 8 miles up to the bridge, unless you have VERY shallow draught. The quay is great at high tide. Tie up to the wall and have a pint and chips. |
Quote:
You should try somewhere different now and again mate :D |
yeah but doesnt he visit ALL the pubs? surely thats a bit of variety
|
Quote:
.... Once I've done ALL the pubs around Anglesey by boat, I'll move on to territories new! I reckon I've only done about 1/3. |
Quote:
Can't imagine the view if there were 2 dozen plus ribs going for a quick potter down a couple of miles and mooring up outside the pub! |

Accommodation and RIB storage booked at Helen's place, next door to Ty Calch, Fri-Sun. I've never been this organised and planned anything this far in advance for years! :D
