Forum Update on Monday - Q & A

1 Attachment(s)
This coming Monday the Forum Software and 'skin' will be updated. It is possible that there will be a brief period when the board is not online, but we hope to keep it to a minimum.

There will be some nifty new features and a new look. After the initial upgrade we will continue to tweak settings and so ask for your indulgence whilst this is being undertaken.

Here's a sneak peak at the new look:

Hightower 03 June 2011 16:45

Looks good.... But!

Could we have the "Recent Discussions" as a button/link on the main menu page?

I like the Idea of using "Recent Discussions", but it takes up too much space on my desktop (and judging by other peoples comments) and the only way of toggling it is to go though user CP. Much better to have a button in my opinion.

We've been away for a long week-end and I've only just caught this. I don't know what I've done to deserve the honour but 'tis indeed me! Well spotted. :speedboat:

Nasher 06 June 2011 05:50

Looks good:thumbs:
hopefully it will all go well and give us all a nicer expriance on our favorite forum.

I'm assuming that following recent discussions the daft box on the right will be fully removable as a option.

Nasher.

Whoaaa - its all changed ! I cant get away with skiving when at work ( as easily now ) ... change it all back !!!!;)

Brilliant! Great improvement.

But, yes, it is more obvious that it isn't work!!

Congratulations and thanks to all for the hard work involved in the changes.

Seconded! :D

Can we have a "highly reduced visuals so it looks a lot less like Ribnet & more like work" option?

Not sure if the new forum image has been fully tweeked, but before if we did not log on I could quickly hit "todays post" and could see forum posts but know it has asked me for more info, is this correct?

gotchiguy 06 June 2011 10:54

Two points:

Please can we have the "top of page" button back where it was before? I know it is still there in the corner, but I preferred its old position.

Please could we have the boat details back under each username.

Not too fussed about the exact location of the top of page button (fussy git:rolleyes:) but user's boat details was quite handy, people often start talking about "the boat" so it's handy to know what exactly they're going on about

Can you believe it, no running water, hardly any electricity, but mobile phone masts everywhere! Get a better signal here than the north coast of Jersey

Just waiting for dinner in our Tanzania lodge, so thought that $4 to catch up on what's happening in the real world didn't seem too bad (using a very slow pc). Guards are outside to keep us safe from all the lions, leopards, wildebeest and zebra roaming around out there looking for their own dinner. We'll be needing a new forum for holiday snaps at the rate we're taking photos.

One other thing: surely it makes sense for the "community forums" to be below the RIB ones. Seeing as they are supposed to be the main content of the site.

It may only be me but it has been my impression over the years that JK tried to stay away from having too many different sections and all the glitzy bits. I accept that it may be part and parcel of joining the "social knowledge" group, however some of the "improvements" do seem to be a little superfluous, potential detractors in fact from the main sections?

Possibly - but for new members trying to get help with their first issues or having trouble navigating the forum this section is invaluable. We just set up an intro forum in the community section as well after seeing a bunch of newbie posts in various other sections that went unanswered. They easily get lost and it can be very for a first time poster to get no response...

For the most part, regular members will just scroll past the new bits at the top. Did you know you can even close a category?

Click on the tiny arrow over to the top right of the category to minimize it :)

Nasher 06 June 2011 12:40

Looking good:thumbs:

Nasher

willk 06 June 2011 13:29

Very Pretty.

What we need now are some new "skins". I'd like one that has no RIBnet logo (especially now that Bill Oddie is on it). In fact, I'd like it to look/function like an email client, making it Safe For Work. That way I could get more done, posting I mean, not work. Obviously :ermm:

Why stop there though? Customised Skins for RIBnetters. Biffer would approve - his could look exactly like the old RIBnet. Bigwuss would presumably want his to look like the next version. Nasher's might look like posts quickly sketched on the back of old HMRC envelopes. Polwart's could appear to run in Debugging Mode, and flash up all the rude bits for removal. If Martini ordered one, it would probably be black text on a black background, but it would be visible with IR goggles. Gotchi's might automatically post replies exploiting the Three Degrees of Separation that link any random post with Ospreys in two steps. Or one. Channel Rib's would be just as good as everyone else's but cost a fraction less, before tax.

:)

It Looks far better. The site did look pretty basic and very, made from a template before. 10/10

Also good regarding ease for newer users/boaters.

Boat details useful below name too.

I think a weekly or monthly nominated pic at the top could be good. Might get bored of avocet! People post a pic in a separate section and whoever gets the most votes gets put up. May encourage site use!

If I search for that vid in youtube and then cut and paste the link from the browser address bar I get this:

Ah, works for me now too. Must be cos the link was different, the address contained reference to the user instead of the word "watch", due to me being logged in to youtube and subscribed to venturejet's channel

New site looks great, much more modern and multi quote is pretty cool.

However another vote for putting the community stuff at the bottom and leaving RIBs and RIBBING as the the top page. New users might find it useful but as you put it they can just scroll down. Regular users don't want to use it every time they visit.

Agreed, it is actually quite a big issue. The new header also takes up significantly more space than ever before, and along with the rotating album pictures (one of the most worthwhile improvements IMVHO) AND
the community forums, it takes a long time to scroll down. I pity those who do not have adverts turned off, I imagine that they have even further to scroll down.

One of the superfluous features in my opinion is the quick reply function:
Quote:

I fully agree, it does not add anything, and if anything it will simply encourage unnecessary short posts between posters such as myself and willk, thereby undoubtedly detracting from the content of the site. Multi-quote is ok, but again in the past John has spoken against it. I was under the impression it was not present (in much the same way as quotes within a quote) to ensure that threads do not become ceaseless lines of quotes which need to be waded through to reach the content. When something needed to be multi-quoted it was still possible to achieve it.

The "newbie" forum is also something ribnet has avoided in the past. Many forums require it because "flame wars" are started when a new person makes a mistake by doing something against some underwritten rule of the site in the main body. Apart from for trade memberships, we do not have that issue.

Oh and I call again for the replacement of the top button in its proper place. I do not like the app so I continue to log in properly on my phone through the link in the instant email, when navigating it is very annoying where the button is placed now.

It may have been "made from a template" before Humber but I think we were better off for it. The new site although it has some new and interesting features has, in my opinion become too gimicky.

gotchiguy 07 June 2011 10:56

One other thing, I mentioned a while back but seems not to have been done in the update like you suggested it would: when using the "preview post" function, the text is the entire width of the page. If you are using complicated formatting etc then this distorts it. Surely it would make sense for the preview page to be the same size as the normal forum so that you can actually preview how it will look when you post it.

gotchiguy 07 June 2011 11:05

Also, comments on profile: WTF!

Actually I quite like it:willk:

.....but is it something that benefits the forum?

Well can I suggest that you learn some self control then! :bang: Willk's cutting barbs have usually been too carefully crafted for quick reply to make a difference. I don't actually see quick reply as essential - but I've used other forums where it is in place and don't see a correlation to increased amounts of trivia.

You have me to blame for that! I suggested it because I think it is a useful feature. I completely recognise the risk you perceive with pages of quoted rubbish - but of course smart users can use it selectively.

Of course if either of those features result in unnecessary amounts of time being wasted or increase the amount of time we spend moving you to the bilges the features can be turned off. However we'll never know if these features are pointless or useful unless we try them out. Likewise it would be wrong to exclude all users from benefiting because one or two will abuse them (but those who abuse them might lose them :D!)

Maybe, but avatars add color and fun. regular members can have small avatars 80 x 80 pixels. Supporters can have larger ones - 120 x 120.

I was thinking more along the lines of a rotating picture (with a fairly slow change time eg 5-10secs) rather than anything silly. Although the emoticons have all suddenly gone 2d-3d, surely jpeg to gif is the same type of move?:willk:

9D280 08 June 2011 04:30

One potentially silly question: when you have minimised all the extraneous toot that gets in the way of the discussions, is (for example) the scrolling pic thing still scrolling away in the background?

I ask becasue I have noticed a small but still perceptible slowing of the site with all the new whistles & bells, which I have a strong suspicion that when I go to the back end of beyond and log in via dial-up ..... .....:zz:

I repeat my request for a "lite" version. Both for stealth:whistle: & speed!

You can just delete the RIBnet cookies manually, but this link should do the trick instead:

https://www.rib.net/forum/login.php?do=logout

Let me know how it goes.

Thank you Mr K worked fine.
must admit whilst logged out and looking at the sight as a guest I do object to having all those adverts in my post as it looks like they are things I recommend. I fully see the reason for advertising on the site but feel that in the body of a post is a very deceptive form.

John Kennett 08 June 2011 08:16

Urk. I'll have a look.

C2 RIBS 08 June 2011 08:50

I phone app

Hi John sorry I cannot now access private messages on I phone app yet I can do everything else.
it states" you do not have access to private messaging"

John Kennett 08 June 2011 09:07

Can you still access them normally on your PC?

Poly 08 June 2011 09:12

John - I get a "Permission Denied" trying to do the same in Android App. Works fine on the PC.

ashbypower 08 June 2011 09:14

It's great to see that the BETA testing before going "Live" was a success Smiles should be here but wont work either !!! lol

Smilies aren't working on mobile devices? You need to use the short cut text on a mobile.

John Kennett 08 June 2011 10:32

Only a very limited selection of smilies render on the iPhone app. The rest just show the code.

Janet H 08 June 2011 10:45

The mobile apps have some limitations. Only the stock vBulletin smilies display. Any that we added after the fact will require using the text shortcuts. Some other forum features that are add-ons also are supported by the mobile apps. They are fast and convenient but there is a trade off with a lighter platform.

:)

Nasher 08 June 2011 10:50

Well if nothing else the upgrade must have increased the traffic/daily post rate purely by creating this thread. :D

Nasher.

:iagree: It suggests I support the ads which is not why I post

C2 RIBS 08 June 2011 16:05

This is what was below my post- no issues with google ads as I use them but they should not be in the body of a forum members post-

Andy R 08 June 2011 16:23

I have been talking to the team and we will be changing the setup so those AdSense ads will not appear in any post of RIBnet Supporters or Trade Members. We cannot control where the other in-text ads (where you have to hover) appear so we won't be able to restrict those.

9D280 09 June 2011 03:41

Ah, Ads in all the posts. I have them all turned off, could this be why it's perceptivlety slower as I suspect they download anyway?

And another wee moan:

I used to be able to spot instantly whether I had replied to a post or not because the nice compact symbol had a big blue obvious dot in it.

Now It has a tiny white reply arrow that merges in nicely with the rest of the symbol, which quite frankly at a glance looks much the same as the rest of the "thread status" symbols.

Probably just my browsing style, but it's chuffin' annoying.

The site does look slicker, but so far none of the upgrades have improved my browsing pleasure - I have to scroll more and PMs now involve an extra drop -down to get them... and that's before I try it over a dial-up onnection.... Even this "reply" box is surrounded by a nice shade of blue, which is quite obviously not..well... something else! Right now sat at this desk I prefer the old one......

Moan over. :)

It may have already been answered, but is there a reason theres not a simplified web based interface to the site? If it was to use jquery/ajax or similar for loading, it would be quick, and work on more devices. I know it wouldn't support file uploads.. but should support everything else quite well?

So I take it the option of turning ads off is no longer available then ? because it wasnt just restricted to supports IIRC .. everyone used to have that option ?

John Kennett 09 June 2011 05:54

The changes that are being made at the moment are intended to show more ads to unregistered guests while having as little impact on registered members as possible. We're still working on some of the details, so bear with us for a bit!

The adverts in the the first couple of posts in a thread will only be shown to guests, and not to any registered users. It's a pretty standard vBulletin setup these days - it gets good results and doesn't affect registered users at all. We're working on a system so that these ads won't be shown at all in any posts made by supporters or trade members, in the meantime they have been deactivated.

The separate option where registered users can opt out of seeing other adverts will probably change to paid up supporters only. The plan is for all existing registered members to get "grandfather" rights though so it should only affect people who join after the new system is finalised.

The good news is that everyone else is also fumbling around a bit - you have some company in that respect. I think you'll find in a few days that the surprise will wear off. It's also important to remember that we are still tweaking things and dialing in some features. :flowers:
