What RIB for an RYA training school ????

Hi All

Looking for a few ideas to what people think would be a good RIB that would be suitable as an RYA training boat would be looking to teach up to advanced .

Cheers

I may be in the minority here, but I'd love to see more cabin RIBS available for tuition/charter!

I guess the cost may not make this practical, but maybe there could be a benefit if it expands your season?

I did my intermediate last October and to say that was cold would be an understatement (to be fair it was a particularly freakishly cold couple of days)!

What about something like a Stormforce 6.5 with wrap around canopy?

Ha , Yep very true !

Slightly too big for that , after something slightly smaller that may do the job as a training rib.
Open to suggestions !

We have a humber 5.7 ocean pro for sale built to a commercial spec and would tick all the boxes for advance rya corses (I think). Given the new rules, I think this would be the minimum size you will get away with but it realy depends on your budget and what you need to get out of it.

After trying a few differnet RIBs over the years, we now operate a Coded Humber 7.5m with Honda 250hp as our main teaching boat and feel it makes an ideal teaching platform. I feel that anything below 7m is to small for Intermediate & Advanced courses, especially when it gets choppy. Above 8m and it becomes difficult to manouve in confined spaces.

Perfect choice - I used a Redbay 6.5m for Intermediate and Advanced courses for over 5 years and this boat has the necessary seating configuration and should be a doddle to get coded to meet the new RYA requirements.

The Stormforce Redbay is a nice choice.

There is no single answer to your questions There are however a few questions you need to ask before you start.

1/. Where are you going to be operate? Just as someone buying a private boat will look at what is appropriate for their area, so do you. Different operating areas lend themselves to different boats.

2/. How are you going to operate? Are you going to berth in a marina or keep on a trailer and launch each course, clearly launching becomes more of an issue with bigger boats. Are you going to be teaching g youth groups or mainly adults? How available is fuel? Does you geographical location make filling a thirsty boat straight forward and so on

3/. What range of courses are you going to offer? I know you have already mentioned Advanced but I would recommend you business plan 2 options, one with advanced recognition and one without. One of my boats is 6m, uncoded and has no A frame and lights. In real terms it cant run advanced courses but saved about £6K at purchase. If you recognise that Advanced powerboat makes up less than 2% of the market place you have to ask yourself if investing so much money in it is the right call. Certainly having a Level 2 boat that you can afford to replace more often has some merits, you have to run an awful lot of courses to pay for the coding and extras.

4/. What is your budget? can you afford to go new? Your customers wont thank you for having a brilliant boat if it suffers engine problems and ruins their course. The advantages of a new/warranty engine are immense.

5/. What price point are you aiming to sell courses at. The bigger your boat, the higher your overheads and the more you will have to charge to make the courses viable.

Doug, is there not a plan to continue rolling out coding of boats for intermediate and then PB2 courses under RYA? I agree coding is expensive as I can show on our training RIB.

Well it currently works that you can commercially endorse the L2, so I am not sure what would need to change IF the Intermediate had a commercial endorsement option.

The recent amendments to powerboats used for training make allowance for intermediate courses that go to sea beyond cat 6 already.
