What are the SR4 alternatives?

Hi,

My local sailing club is looking into replacing one of its older SR4 and i was looking into the alternatives. I know that SR4's are widely loved on here but what are the alternatives?

It also needs to fit into a garage and have a relatively high jockey console so people don't hurt their backs.

The alternatives i have found is the Ribcraft 4.2m, Zodiac 420, Ribeye TA400 & the Humber Assault 4m.

Can anyone think of any more?

Thanks

Brig make a 4m RIB with jockey console and hypalon tube option.

Or, there's the 4m Avon Adventure.

Beach launched and used in Carmarthen Bay (SW Wales), relatively sheltered and normally within 2 miles of the coast.

The worst conditions is a chop a few feet high, very occasionally it kicks up into a swell a couple of meters high.

We bought a 5m Assault as an upgrade from a 4.65m Avon Supersport last year and it is an improvement, even the slightly raised bow helps.

The 4.2m Ribcraft was done by the same person who designed the SR4.

Thats good to know, i have emailed Ribcraft for a quote, just have to see how competitive it is compared to everything else .

Also, the current plan is to transfer a 30hp Honda 4 stroke onto it from the SR4 so has to be manageable with that on the back.

Tornado
Valiant

Not sure if 4.5m is too big? but that would give you:

RS (Ribshop on here)
XS

Unfortunately 4.5 is too big, and i think we are going to be limited to a new SR4 or a Zodiac Pro420 as these seem to have the narrowist beam, the garage must have a small door, the 5m Assault was tested and wouldn't fit and that has a 2m beam, same as its 4m equivalent. Most of the others i have found info on have a wider beam than the SR4.

I have emailed Avon and i think someone will be ringing them, but any ideas how much a new SR4 costs? I think it would only be a bare hull and we'd source a taller console else where.

Avon pro (commercial) have now teamed with Zodiac and are producing new SR's under the Zodiac brand using the same design. Get hold of the latest copy of Sports boat and RIB as there is a small write up in there. or www.zodiacmilpro.com

Searider has a 1.8m beam?

Then Valiant DR4.00 at 1.77 m should be OK.

EDIT: And in true ribnet spirit of own brand self promotion a Funyak 390 will be 1.6m although not strictly speaking a rib - it would be suitable for the sort of thing you are talking about.

Yea, thats the value i had for the SR4, 1.80m beam, the garage must be around 1.85 ~ 1.95 width as 2m is too wide.

I had forgotten about Valiant, i will send the local dealer an email and see what they come back with.

So far i have:

Ribcraft 4.2, 4.20m length & 2.10m beam
Brig F400, 3.93m length & 1.93m beam
Zodiac pro 420, 4.20m length & 1.86m beam
Ribeye TA400, 3.96m length & 2.00 beam
Avon SR4, 4.05m Length & 1.80m beam

Anyone have any more?

He's looking for a rescue boat, not an oil storage tank.

I have at home a spreadheet with dimensions for almost every rib below 6m. I did it about 2 years ago when I was looking at upsizing from my SR4, and has info for everything I could find at the time.

If you can wait 'till tonight / tomorrow I will filter it for everything sub 2m beam & post the results.

If you can be bothered searching, I did much the same thing for someone about a year or so ago. If I get time later I'll try to find & link it.

Im not in any rush so if you could find that spread sheet that would be great. I have started one, but its only basically got the numbers i have previously posted and a few extra bits on.

Cheers

Sorry about the wait.

I've filtered it for "less than or equal to 1.95 m Beam" Note that these are web quoted numbers, so take with the usual pinch of internet salt - I haven't been out with a tape measure!

Make Model LOA Beam
Avon Adventure 450 4.5 1.92
Avon SR4M 4.05 1.8
Avon Adventure 400 4.05 1.92
Humber O-Pro 2m beam 5 1.92
Humber O-Pro 2m beam 5.3 1.92
Menai 430SR 4.26 1.87
Ribeye Open Tender 4.5 1.9
Rib-X Explorer 510 5.1 1.21
Solent 460 4.6 1.9
Solent 540 5.4 1.9
zodiac Pro 7 man 4.2 1.86
zodiac Yachtline 420 DL 4.2 1.86

Should be enough to reduce your search a bit.

Edit: Apologies for the formatting - it looked fine on the preview window.

RIBase
I can recommend the Zodiac Pro 420. It was my last boat before I traded up to a RIBcraft 4.8m commercial. Easy to launch and retrieve and fits in a domestic garage with ease. The Zodiac range of consoles, jockey seats and bench seats means you can configure it as you wish, although prices are a bit on the steep side. I used mine in the Moray firth and in the west coast (Lewis) and always felt safe even when it was blowing a F6. Even managed to squeeze a Tohatsu 3.5hp auxilliary in for good measure. Engine choice was a mint Yamaha 40hp 2-stroke, although a Yamaha F50, Suzuki DF50 or E-Tec 50hp would suit it well.

Any other information on the Zodiac - just holler!
