Metcheck is without doubt an excellent tool and we are spolit today for the quantity of weather information that is at our fingertips.

I have found that Metcheck significantly underestimates the wind strength on the Solent, and I now apply a multiple of 1.75 to the windspeed shown for IOW.

Has anybody looked at Windguru.cz . It is a kitesurfing site and I am evlauating their predictions against Metcheck, so far with greater accuracy IHMO.

With windguru you are able to see wind data along with waveheight and direction etc and the MM5 model offers hourly predictions.

Tip. When selecting "location" on windguru, remember to press the "go" button otherwise it stays on Hawaii, which is not very relevant for Portsmuff.

As I stare out of.........

...........my window up here on the 14th floor or my tenement council flat overlooking the Salford oils refinery bunkers it's blowing a gale, raining and dark. I'd love ot get out of here and enjoy walks on the beach but I'm afraid to leave my flat for fear of attack from the youths who wonder the terraces with spray cans, knives and drugs. Furthermore, the lift has once again broken. The engineer advises that due to the stench of piss he won't be back for at least another month so for now I can only wonder what it must be like to live so near to the beach. Jono, you're such a lucky fella.

I didn't know that companies in your line of work had such luxurious offices. Perhaps you may consider a move to one that has offices in London, New York, Paris and PETERSFIELD. Then you would be able to enjoy the delights of the Solent along with all the weather it can throw at you.
As we say down here, "If you can see the Isle of Wight it going to rain..........etc".
P.S. have you considered bungee cord to get over the lift problem?
P.P.S We have an oil refinery too.

Weather Forecasts on the net

Hi folks,

We have found www.theyr.net to be a superb forecast service. It does take a few minutes to get it set up to your home port and another few minutes to learn obout the features.

It's still free.

We have ours set up with Galway as our main port and the default view set to wind conditions.

We have found that it give very accurate wind stenghts and directions and sea states down to even discrete parts of Galway Bay and the Aran Islands.

We have been using it now for 2 years and find it more accurate than any other site.

Best wishes,

Stuart

Just been out for a play wow its good out there, we also found a cork 1720 sportsboat with no one in it drifting along 2 miles offshore. So towed it in £25000 worth of salvage ????

Why don't people use the official met office? It is where most people get their data from and the shipping forecasts are great

http://www.met-office.gov.uk/

http://www.met-office.gov.uk/datafiles/offshore.html

http://www.met-office.gov.uk/datafiles/inshore.html

Got to be the most comprehensive for any boater!

By the name thought you meant some little speedboat - not a yacht!!!

Hope some poor bugger didn't fall off the thing - if not I would definitely go down the salvage route - perfectly justified in these circumstances

Grey and drizzly here in Newfoundland! Tail end of hurricane whatever it was that cause havoc in the US a while ago. Gonna brighten up though so should be able to go sailing again. Oh for a RIB here though.

Notified the coastguard, it just wasn't tied up correctly.

If we had left it another 20mins it would of been on the rocks
