Waterproof-ish toolbox

Any suggestions as to what's best for a semi waterproof toolbox? My previous one was a sort of tool bag but the zip has rusted solid now. It is kept inside the console so it does not need to be fully waterproof however some water definitely does go in there. There is also a relatively small access hatch to fit in there so most of the traditional plastic ones won't fit, not that they're necessary either as we only carry a basic selection on board.

Thoughts?

I use one of these from solent plastics.

It's waterproof, but also has a rust inhibitor in the plastic.

I'd make your hatch bigger to fit something decent in.

If you want to keep it Dry..Go Peli!..plenty of used Bargains on ebay....Gumtree ect.

I've got an explorer case for general survival kit that lives on deck, but there's no need for something so heavy duty. It will be under cover but it would be nice if it didn't rust like the old one

I carry a good old fashioned BDH container. Works a treat, fits in the hatch and the tools are vacuum packed within. The multi tools aren't but I just treat these as disposable.

Get yourself to a Tupperware party and pick up a large Tupperware box. My onboard toolkit lives in one just fine. It's also clear plastic so you can see what's inside at a glance.

Dry bags and tools don't work in my experience. Relatively blunt things like screwdrivers magically put hole in them...

Another pluss for the Peli then!

I suppose The OP was on a sticky wicket when he said "Waterproof-ISH"..On any RIB...not the driest of environments...especially if your gonna keep the tools ONBOARD! there can't be ANY compromise. IMO they have to be in completely waterproof and preferably AIR proof container!....even then you want keep em oiled and check them regularly.
Could be a real Shitty day if they're US when you really need em!

But I don't think a peli works for his space. I don't think we know what tools. A standard ring spanner with a bit of rust, not ideal but probably still works. An adjustable spanner doesn't.

But if he is keeping it in the console and the console is dry it may be far less of an issue. There is plenty of electrics in most consoles but you don't see people saying 'mount your electronics in a pelicase'

Agree with oil. Could be persuaded by a oiled canvas tool roll in a dry bag or a narrow flare box that fits the space. But I'm a messy user if tools and a canvas roll would not get put away properly by me or would have been in the bilge first...

Personally I don't carry much in the way of tools on the boat. Realistically there's very little you can do repairs wise, to a modern engine whilst out on the water. I do carry a comprehensive tool kit in the car when I take the boat anywhere, but this usually gets used for trailer problems. For what I carry, a large plastic clip top food box would suffice. I keep my stuff in a flarebox on the A frame.
