Transom security bolts

Just bought a new outboard and I have seen transom security bolts on a rib where I keep mine and wondered if there is any advice on which ones are best and any good bad / experiences with them please.

I notice one of the terms with my insurer states theft of outboard motors is not covered 'unless it is securely locked by an anti theft device which prevents retaining bolts/clamps being undone, in addition to its normal method of attachment'

I don't think it'll matter what type you fit. If someone wants you're engine they'll just cut through the whole transom and take engine and transom away together. I guess the only advice would be to take a photo of whatever you do fit just to show your insurers in case they ever ask.

I see what your saying but to be honest I don't think anyone will be doing that. Of course they could but want quality security bolts.

Don't want to buy cheap ones if the salt water affects them or they cause hassle for me to remove them if I need to remove the engine.

Thanks Ian. How many in a pack do they supply 4 or is 1 deemed sufficient to safeguard the outboard from thieving skumbags.

One is required to satisfy your insurance terms but on the larger engines it's been found recently that these "gangs" (who are responsible for the majority of thefts) are simply leaving that side of the bracket on the boat.

Fitting more makes it harder still but if they want it... Especially Yam 4 strokes. If you've bought the 2 stroke you wanted I'd say one will suffice

RIBase
Always liked the look of the 'volcano' but ended up with one of the ones that slides over the top two adjusters / bolts

We use Volcano locks and have found them to be very good.

They get dunked upto 5 times a day, and have never failed to release on the first turn of the key.

Also changed the bolts to ones that were counter sunk and counter sunked the saddle holes to help stop the heads being ground off.

All this will just give you rither more time/noise whilst being removed, but sadly will not prevent theft if really determined

I have a Volcano fitted and never had any issues with it seizing up. The chap who makes them in Barnstable is very helpful. Good quality lock IMHO.

Just removed a mcguard lock within seconds using a set of mole-grips and an impact wrench. Good job it was mine to remove!

That's a hint to steer clear of Mcgard then. But in all
Honesty I doubt any of the others would have been any better? What do you think?

Most of the others are not as easily removed without the use of a grinder etc. I've got to be honest and say I was surprised at how easy it came off.

We usually fit either Volcano locks or Yamaha ones but they are both much more expensive. Well worth it IMHO considering the consequenceses of not having one fitted!

Do you sell Volcano or Yamaha ones Peter? Could be worth posting up some prices as most insurers now insist on them I bet there is a market for them here.
