Too small to name?

Looking at the SIBs and mini RIBs in the local boat park, none of them are marked with names, neither are any of the kayaks. No name for a bigger boat would probably be unimaginable.

Is this due to some unwritten protocol, maybe driven by masculinity, for example, it's ok for women to name their cars, but considered a bit weird for men to do so? "The Merc" or "the Landy" is usually about as close as it gets.

Could it be due to a ruling by Poseidon or Neptune, based on ancient definition of what a ship is and anything under 4m is too humble to deserve a name other than maybe its subservient status as "Tender to..."?

What's your view?

Mine has a name - I’ve just never got round to sticking it on! But it appears on any official documents, vhf calls etc. I suspect at least part of the issue is how/where to stick it: tubes are hard for the reasons on another thread about ID numbers, transoms on small boats are often cluttered and get scuffed/worn with engines lifted on off. Hull near bow is common on larger boats but probably not visible on small ribs unless you are swimming! And consoles are the other common option on big ribs...

My friend had a birchwood 40 called chorus line. So the tender on the davits was called washing line. There is no protocol, it's just up to you to do what you choose.

I noticed you can buy splash covers for outboards, as long as the boat has a shortish name then thats an option, but at £60+ plus whatever it costs to have the name added its not a cheap option.

I always carry the same name through our SIB changes. Just makes it easier to have a name for insurance, river/harbour registration etc. Always see what space is left on transom after initial kitting out (transom wheel fixings etc) then get self-adhesive letters/sign made to fit in the available space on the inside of the transom.

I think you've just missed them. My Land Rover had a name. My 2.7m SIB used to have a name until she became a TT. I know plenty of sub 4m craft that have names.

All my boats, have names, as do their smaller counterparts:
My SIB is Joey as at the time the RIB was Blue Kangeroo
My little 2m Wetline inflatable is I use for getting ashore to beaches is "Baby Boat " for obvious reasons.
Every boat should have a name - whether it's written on it or not.

Most printshops can do a bespoke vynal for a console quite cheaply- letters and image.

My SD360 was inadvertently named by the recently banished SR. He said I looked like a "Redneck" when I posted a picture of the SIB on the roof of my Navara (no name, suggestions welcome) so we christened the SD360 Redneck.

Every time I see your outfit I admire the look of a red SIB with black accents and a black motor.

Further re names... we are dangerously near buying a "day van" as per a thread I started a while back. You know that slippery slope which is being ever more tilted with no handholds in sight. Anyway the eventual it has already gained a name in the house... Truck. No more no less... Truck. Given the majority we have shortlisted are that colour it may be extended to Black Truck.

I didn't realise that's exactly what I normally call the Navara, put it in the "Truck", have you locked the "Truck", put it in the roof of the "Truck".
It's not a name tho, is it?

Red & Black always looks smart.

My boat's name tends to change depending on my mood and whether I'm trying to a very serious marina manager to smile. Although Nostromo does seem to persist.

Thanks for all of your responses. You have some great names on your boats.

Looks like a name is definitely the way to go, regardless of size.

Every boat deserves a name, large or small. Always fascinating when going up rivers and into harbours looking at all the different boat names. (some better than others). one of my favourites in our marina is "Bob the Magnificent". Heres our two..Savannah and Voodoo.
