Tighnabruaich Pontoon

FYI

Had a we trip through the Kyles with Xk59D yesterday and discovered Tighnabruaich has a 100mtr pontoon.
We didn't land as we assumed it was private but no,.......public facility paid for by the locals without outside funding so we'll be stopping by there next time and making a point of patronising one or two of their businesses.

Well done Tighnabruaich hopefully a few others will take a leaf out of your book.

Hi there, it's been there for about a year, iv'e stopped at it quite a few times, really good, but watch the tide.

i will take a trip in tomorrow and see what is at end of pier, never set foot there so worth a look.

Yeah it's a great facility and well used. As I'm local to the area i'm going to use it more. One of the guys I work with bought a pontoon block, I believe that's how a lot of it was funded by individuals.

There's also one at Strachur Bay as well on Loch Fyne, again community based.

We're trying to get one on Isle of Raasay just now... Hopefully get it in for next summer!

I went to look at it but wind was blowing right up there so was too rough to tie up.

That's the trouble with the floating block type pontoon its susceptible to the elements mainly the chop and swell

Probably better just using a single line and let the boat drift off it.

I am out tomorrow but wind looks same so probably won't get on it again.

It doesn't have any particularly big cleats on it so not sure how happy you'd be tying a large beast to it in a strong blow. IMHO better suited to a tender if you have one.

Cleats are big enough, had a rope on one.

Couple of 5m ish ribs tied to it this week.

Wouldn't go near it in wind though as it is not very steady looking in waves.... Just the way these things are unfortunately but great facility none the less.

Not sure what make the floats are but we use jet floats and they can be water ballasted to make them more stable also can be doubled up so the bottom can be fully flooded

Yeah, there some room on the ferry pier at the dog leg end but it's a bit limited (see image!). Been pushing for pontoons for yonks here but as I say it'll hopefully happen next year.

Be careful tying up to the Tighny pontoon. The side is fine but the end has nasty metal edges sticking out and no fenders. The spikes are covered in antifoul and gelcoat from boats that have found out the hard way!! The village has several hotels, a restaurant,coffee shop and various shops, gallery and Post office. Worth a stop. There is a petrol station but you have a fair hike from the pontoon or you have to anchor off a rocky beach and get ashore to access the fuel. Not open Sunday.

Yeh. it looks like they're part of the mooring chain fixing bracket. a bit nasty but easy to avoid if you look out for them.
