suggest you try the ultimate in Offshore capability combined with superb Shockmitigation.

We have built "Seawolf" to attempt to set the Round Ireland Speed Record and the 2010 Round Ireland Offshore Powerboat Race.

Using the latest in Shockmitigation with a fully suspended ICE console with seating for 3, although frankly 2 is enough.
And we have discovered you can light a ciggie at 50 knots.

Twin Suzuki DF300's currently running at 60 knots with superb handling in just about any conditions. Bulletproof.

Quinquari Marine in Wales would be very happy to build you one to your exact specification and close to budget I am sure.

OK, for what it's worth here are some thoughts.

For more traditional offshore cruising RIBs I would look at something like

Ribcraft
Parker
Redbay
Humber (Quinquari)

For more committed race oriented RIBs the you could look at

Revenger
Pascoe
Technohull

Scorpion would also be a sound choice, and is something of a crossover between the two types - can be raced hard but also makes a good cruising boat.

Bear in mind that for Class E the minimum measured length (see below) is 7.35m which is likely to equate to a something sold as an 8.5m RIB, and for Class D it's 8.23m which could be up to a nominal 10m RIB. Check before you buy.

The hull choice is only one part of the decision though, and whatever you go for there are two things that will massively affect how well you get on:

- quality of fit out
- seating and ergonomics

A boat that is properly put together is less likely to let you down. It sounds obvious, but is often overlooked. Even without racing at 100% you'll be stressing the boat far more than most. A standard leisure fit out may not be good enough so make sure you know what you are getting, and that you are happy that it will be good enough.

Standard seating and ergonomics on RIBs tends to vary from bad to awful. At normal RIB speeds (say up to 50mph) you can get away with it. If you want to make decent progress at higher speeds for long distances then it becomes more critical. I would definitely have suspension seats and make sure that the controls are set up to suit you.

There are only 2 real players in the seat market that I know of - Ullman and Shockwave. I personally don't get on with the Ullman seats at all, but that might be because I'm exceedingly tall and they haven't been set up properly for me. From what is on display at Seawork this week they seem to be almost industry standard now, so they are well proven.

Shockwave seats as used by Pulsar and Team Swipes in RB08 look like a good option, and bucket seats are generally more secure at high speeds. They also mean that you can use a foot throttle and keep both hands on the wheel which can be a bonus.

Although there is clearly easy access at both sides it doesn't look like it fits the Marathon rules for partial canopies which require an open top or rear access:

"there must be an open top frame with a minimum open space sufficiently large (minimum 55cm X 82.5cm) for each person in the boat to exit immediately. This clearly wasn't written with this sort of setup in mind, but might cause some problems. The other option is to comply with the full UIM rule 508 for canopies, but I don't know if that's feasible.

On the basis that most manufacturers have little or no race boat building experience, we are happy to offer to rerig any standard boats that are intended to be used for racing if second hand or rig a new hull for anyone.

May have a few options on craft we have designed,
- Technohull 999, particularly attractive if you wish to go twin outboard route
- Working on a new 10m triple step sportsboat design for a UK company, build about to commence
- Possibility of a one-off Aluminium RIB with a company we have worked with recently
- Also we have two different 12m stepped hull RIBs going into production - but would be difficult to stay within budget.
- Possibility of a very exciting 9.6m RIB for Watermark Marine - but they have not confirmed production dates yet. A real mix of a serious offshore hull with performance.

A lot depends on how much you want a raceboat or a boat that will have other uses as well. Also if you want a craft or build tailored to suit any particular requiremenst or direction / concept.

Here you have one with a proven record...

DAHL 36 RIB - VILDA :

Ocke Mannerfelt-designed twinstep hull
Topspeed 65 knots. Cruisespeed 60-62
Three fueltanks. Total 1100 liters
Fuelcons 2 l/Nm at 50 kn
Watertank 200 liters

Weight aprox 5000 kg raceready
No interior in the cabin but it is possible to put in a toilet or a kitchen.

You can stand upright in the cabin. It is possible to race her in "ClassG":

G MotorCruiser 7.35 – 15.3m (24’ – 50’) 2 x VOLVO 394 kg/M

The hull was built in 2005 with 2x D6-350/DPR. Topspeed 58 and max cruisespeed 52 kn.
I bought the boat in October 2006 from Henrik Dahl with 200 hours on the meter.
Another 150 hours use in 2007 before I decided to enter the Round Britain 2008 Race.

To get more speed I decided to change the engines to D6-435 and had the drives modified by Volvo to the latest specifications.
When the engines were changed during last winter we also changed everything else int the engineroom.
New hydraulics to the steering incl oilcooler, electrics, batteries, fuellines, bilgepumps, 4 fireext etc

The instruments were also overhauled with the latest setups from Raymarine.
The instruments are 2x E120 GPS-plotters + one ST 70 , radar, rategyro, VHF.

Four Ullman-seats with suspension and footstraps.

The VildaRib is one beautiful boat and ran unbelievably during RB08 and would be a fantastic contender for RB12. Other than the boat I was in and the Goldfish boats this was the next best looking boat there and was more reliable than the Goldfish RIBS!

If you are serious about doing RB12 then get in touch with Mikko and do a deal before someone else snaps it up and its reduced price.
