Suggest me a sailing club rescue boat.

My sailing club is looking for a new rescue boat.

They've got a couple of 6m Tornados with 60hp 4 strokes and a couple of 4m Jeanneau plastic boats with 15hp 2 strokes.

They want something in between to use in the river and also for some Solent duties.

Probably, but not limited to the following:

5.0 to 5.8m
50hp or 60hp
New, or a couple of years old or older but VERY good condition.
Must have, or be able to have fitted a towing post in the stern.

Must be a 4 stroke and not too old.

Budget probably suggests a used boat and a figure of £13k has been suggested. I thought there'd be loads of choice but perhaps i'm not looking properly.

Doesn't need a trailer as will be kept afloat.
Whole budget doesn't need to be spent.
Open to suggestion over budget for truly outstanding candidates.

Suggestions please.

That boat has the most uncomfortable console known to mankind! I borrowed it for Burnham Week last year and it was a long week!

Seriously though a 4.8 is a bit small for a club rescue boat. Try nudging over 5m if the budget allows.

Check this out HERE 5.8 and a very good price for what is essentially a new boat just add a motor.

I know nothing about whether they are any good or not but the VSR range were supposedly developed working with the RYA for sailing coaching so may be worth a look?

Hi Chris,

I would recommend a searider - but trying to find a newish one is tricky.

Ribcraft and ribtec 585 also perfect - but again finding one with a smallish 4 stroke is proving difficult.

Like I said, never seen one but there was an article in the comics about them a year or two back, seem to be mainly designed to offer an economical solution to chasing wafi's with only a fairly small motor.

My local sailing club bought a brand new humber assault 5m with a new honda 40 4stroke and think the package (minus a trailer as we didnt need one) was around the 8.5k mark. That was for a brand new rib and new honda engine. I know the assault isnt the best sea boat out there but for us it was an improvement on the 4.65m avon seasport we had and most members prefer it to the 4m seariders we also have. It could be that its just bigger and still shiney.

Im not sure how the assault would compare to the tornado's you have, they are in a different class i think.

For that money i think you could do a deal with most rib manufacturers for a new boat circa 5m with outboard.

the VSR is a very maneuverable boat, but rather light and subject to getting blown about a bit. The RYA designed console is good though, its good for coaching and judge work.
I'd get a Tornado 585 with twin inline seats and a decent tow post on the end of the stern seat as per the old RYA owned boats, they need more power than the VSR but don't get blown about. Its what I want if I had some where to keep it since the redbay's gone.
The Tornado 4.8 is a good teaching/safety boat but can feel small especially in the exposed areas of the solent.
As your close to RYA Hamble, might be worth asking the rib fleet manager (Ed) if they are rotating any of the fleet.

Glad to hear she is being used, she wasn't down here with me, I find myself doing race mark laying / safety these days and she was too big for that.
Pity to see her gone she's a lovely sea boat, but she deserved to be used.

I owned a Ribcraft 545 for 3 years (about 5 years ago) Had a 90 Mercury 2 stroke on the back. Was absolutely a fantastic boat for me. Used in the Solent and rode like a boat much bigger than it is. Even went on a weekend trip to Alderney which it handled fantasticly. Only sold it when the kids 1st came along and put a dampner on ribbing for a few years but sold it for almost what I had paid for it 3 years earlier, GREAT boat in my opnion.

Humber gave our club 30% discount for buying direct from them last january-
5m assault 2 man sport console,navy tubes, over pressure relief valves,steering,screen etc
£4500 plus vat. brand new and was built to order in our choice of colours.
40 honda 2010 model with FI form pembrokeshire yachts (pirate boats) £3500 plus vat
breakback trailer brand new CLH trailers St Clears Pembrokeshire £1000 inc vat
New 60 honda is bloody expensive though
I'd buy a Yam if looking for a 60, Yamaha will do a special discount for sailing clubs.
Weather Humber would discount a destroyer by 30% though I don't know.
