RANT TIME

So, today we had a gorgeous hot, sunny, calm day. So far so good.

We arrived at the slip to find the car park fairly empty. Still going well.

But then we came to launch and found one selfish speed boat owner getting his boat ready in the middle of the slip taking about 20 minutes.

I didnt mind too much as there was room the other side, well that was until another stupid selfish speed boat owner decided to drive his car down the ramp and block it for no obvious reason.

But then they popped their bonnet and started trying to jump start their speed boat that was already in the water.

Then i was suprised to see them heading out to sea (they had now moved the car) rather than recovering their boat with dodgy battery.

Anyhow we launched, had a great day out and about 4 hours later were enjoying a nice mr whippy at Whitstable when the lifeboat launched.

About half hour later whilst enjoying some waterskiing we saw them towing back the same person that had had to jump start their engine earlier. It really does make me angry. They knew it was faulty, but they still went to sea, they had to call the lifeboat and waste their time and money. The lifeboat page even states they recovered a boat with electrical problems. Bloody idiots.

On the plus side, recovery was quick and easy and the ice cream was nice but why is it people block the ramp rather than prepare in the car park and go to see with dodgy boats????????

I'm quite lucky that the slipway I use is pretty quiet and unless it's a sunny Saturday I very seldom have such issues - there is however a woman who owns a shop next to the slip and parks her van on it. Every time I go to launch I have to park up, and go ask her to move it. Really pisses me off that I'm paying £75 a year slip fee's (that the harbour master is quick to chase me for) and this woman pays nothing but uses the slip as her personal parking spot while the harbour master does nothing about it. Also parents seem to grudge moving their children and get annoyed when you reverse of their sandcastles because they are too lazy to walk 2 mins to the beach so use the sand at the slipway. Again - I'm paying and feel a prick for using it when it's them in the wrong.

With regards to the flat battery - when I bought my boat - I spent £40 on a booster pack for that eventuality....people just won't learn

Man dont you hate that.
I always got frustrated with the sail boys ,messign arround with there dingys on the slip for no reason.

I always prep the old girl before going down the ramp.
makes sense you can see any issues before you launch.

Arrgh, don't get me going about slips
From idiots that can't reverse, and so take up the space of three, through dingy sailors that can't control their craft, to ignorant berks who just drive up and park on the slip as if it is a public car park - whilst others are trying to reverse boats onto the slip
On the plus side, it is a great place to spend an hour or two with a camera, some of the antics are priceless (especially so when it isn't my boat at risk from them!)

Seen it a hundred times... chavs... does my nut , I can get my crew organised and launch on a slip , in, and be clear of the slip and parked and away on the water in less than 5 minutes easy as I'm sure most of us can do ... It beggars belief when these punters break out their gear and their boat for the first time on the damn slip

Why people cant get it into their simple minds to get ready elsewhere then launch. Is it really that difficult to grasp

Although i did have a smile on my face the other day when we recovered. One chap who decided to try and avoid parking charges thought he would leave his boat and trailer on the slipway. As i pulled mine from the water i saw him snatching off the parking ticket from his windscreen.
£60 worse off, ouch.......

Shall we say, we asked them how long they planned on taking and the reply in broken english was something like "2 mins".

The chap i was with told them to get ready in the car park next time in the nicest possible way, but their lack of understanding the english language didnt really help the communications between us. I'm looking at google to find some suitable words in polish for next time we meet.

In this case obviously the battery was goosed but having to jump start a RIB isn't always a reason to not go to sea.
We used to have to do this every time with my old club RIB as it used to lay for weeks and weeks without use. The battery was always discharged enough that it struggled to start the outboard.
Once it had been running and charging for 10 mins or so it was fine all day and would start and stop no problem, it was lack of use that was the problem and obviously some slight leakage across the battery.

I fitted a solar panel. It's about 500x800mm so not small but can charge an empty to full battery in about a week.

That may sound slow but it keeps the battery charged and electrics working when engine off.

Battery is changed every 2 years and I've never had a flat Hopefully......

I use one of those (smaller though) in the missus' car, which goes flat every 3 weeks without it! they are pretty cheap if you google them, and work well.

We have the same arrangement on our rescue boats on board the ship, and it keeps the batteries topped up so they do not need charging at all. A regular replacement (every 2 years) is all we do.

They are monted on top of the righting chamber (on top of the a frame)

I nearly came to blows with a couple of pi55ed up geordies on the slip at Whitby who were trying to launch a jetski. The slip at Whitby is wide enough for 3 cars but they managed to take it all. In ended with me with the winch handle in my hand, having a nose to nose with this tw4t. Spoilt the day

Sadly, tw@ts like this are everywhere. I try to take the time to sit and enjoy their antics - it's less stressful than trying to chivvy them and probably annoys them more. Better still, donegaldan has a very indiscreet laugh...
