SR4 Steering kit

Hiya, been advised to replace steering & there seems to be a good selection of complete kits available - someone suggested the 'no feedback' kit but do I need that or the lightweight one ? NFB seems overkill but don't want to skimp if its better - what have all you Searider rebuild people fitted ?

Sorry if searchable but I'm on a really slow connection

Thanks

I've never had NFB on any of mine, it's not like 50 HP is going to pull the wheel out your hands when you open the throttle!

One thing to watch when buying (or use to your advantage) - if you are using cable steering , Teleflex tdo a "lightweight" system that is good up to (I think) 55 Hp. Needless to say it's cheaper, lighter & the cable goes round corners more easily. The down side (as I discoverd a few months ago) is that the cables are not as readily available as the "midrange" size. Not a problem unless yours suddenly siezes of course!

They do a "quick connect" system that the cables are backward compatible with the old midrange size. I had an 8050 (the lightweight one) in the Humber, thankfully the cable seized on me, as I only discovered when trying to procure the replacemrent that the boat was originally sold with a 40.... I now have a new Bezel as well! Depending what you need the Bezel is taking up space in my garage, if that's what's gubbed on yours, make me an offer..... The only reason it came off is 'coz I now have a 60.

Splash the cash and go for a BayStar Hydraulic Steering Kit HK4700A
Upgraded my SR4.0 and never looked back.
Makes the trips to Scotland from Ireland a lot easier on the body, guess depends how long you are spending cruising about really.

The guys at Quinquari Marine were very helpful, and did their best to talk me trough all possible solutions, In the end, I went with the most expensive, most over engineered and silliest ! Salt water got to the brain, what can I say.

Wow, wasn't planning to do Scotland -Ireland, that's quite impressive! Sadly playing around on a lake is all I can afford at the moment, get the fuel paid for that way.

Many thanks for the info, sounds like the lightweight one will do me as not going above 50hp.

I think I will get the whole lot so I dont have to worry about whether things fit together ... if anyone wants to help I can supply them with cake/dinner (don't laugh it's worked before!)

The Teleflex head on our's was rotton. I bought another on Fleabay and swapped the cables for correct length.

Lady, for Cake, donegaldan would probably pop over and fit it.

RIBase
I fitted baystar hydraulic steering system on my Valiant DR 490 on a 60 hp ETEC. a very nice combo. It makes light work of steering the boat

I got a new helm and cable from Marine Scene in cardiff. Was the teleflex heavy duty one, they were way, way, way, cheaper than anyone else.
Even after fuel to cardiff and back, and a pub meal i was still £30 better off than the price of most other places
There website doesnt have them all listed so best to give them a ring.

I used the NFB on my SR4, easy to fit and works fine. My mate has "normal" steering and gets torque steer with a 60hp.

Doggypaddle - I owe you a pint.

Next day delivery, perfect fit - just need to find an opportunity to test it & make sure nothing falls off!
