South Coast Slips for Beginners

Hi all,

Looking for recommendations for south coast slipways to launch my Excel Virago 420. Anywhere between Swanage and Worthing. I am a relative newbie but have launched from Calshot and Lymington before. Will be on my own this time so preferably somewhere straightforward (and quiet!). Any recommendations greatly appreciated!

Baiter park Poole or my favourite (especially if your camping) Redcliffe campsite, it has a slipway onsite) Wareham. On the River Frome which feeds into Poole harbour, about 3 miles at under 6 knots.

Mudeford was good when we launched there. Loads of parking, toilets, pub, cafe. Not to many trying to use the slipway which has a shallow gradient so it's easy to pull a heavy sib up it.

I’ve used Mudeford many times and it is a good area but keep your eye on the tide, it can dry out completely making recovery difficult.

Just be aware that Baiter Park is a very shallow gradient, so with most boats on trailers expect to get your feet wet when launching! Loads of space to launch though and good parking with trailers.

But with a 4.2m boat just about any slip should be manageable - there's options in Swanage, Poole Harbour, Christchurch, Mudeford, Keyhaven, Lymington, Beaulieu, Calshot, Southampton Water/Itchen/Hamble, Portsmouth, Chichester, and further East.

It also depends what you want to do in terms of boating - personally I find going much beyond Chichester to the East there's far fewer options in terms of places to visit and stop when afloat. If you want to go out to sea fishing, fine, but if you have e.g. wife and children who want to visit places, maybe not as much to do as with the Solent or Poole/Studland/Swanage.

Camber Dock, Portsmouth Harbour.

Good slip, good gradient, usually weed free. Launch and recover at all states of the tide. There is a small charge buy no need to book just pay on the day, lots of parking for both car and trailer.

Can get a bit busy high season weekends.

Good luck

Andy

Can I just check, has anyone been to Camber recently? I had heard there was a load of work going on around the IoW ferry areas just wondered if that had had any effect on launching and getting across to the Ballast Buoy?
