Slightly Second Hand Arctic 28

Spotted down at Port Solent today. The whole of the port side was in a similar state. It was minus engines, seats, console etc and they'd gaffer taped over the identification plate on the stern.

Is that impact damage or faulty layup? Looks like a manufacturing defect.

Definitely if it was a good bond it wouldn’t be that clean I would even say it was a delamination after cure gel coat left too long perhaps rock rash finished the job lucky the glass help up.

Its not just gel coat thats come off though its the complete outer layer of glass the orange is the filler used to fill the chines. I suspect it was allowed to cure between subsequent layers of glass and not abraded for a mechanical bond. Theres a relatively short window for a chemical bond between layers after which it needs ground up to provide a mechanical bond

I returned to Port Solent today as I'd managed to arrive home with the wrong arming kit for my lifejacket.

I'm sure it is a manufacturing defect rather than impact damage.

The marks on the hull are crayon showing the extent of removal of the gelcoat / GRP. A lot of the edges of the GRP are still soft and hairy which suggests there wasn't much in the way of resin in the layer that they are peeling off.
