Road trip to Cornwall

Hi all so the kids are doing their first festival this year in Newquay and my wife would like to be around in case of any issues so I cunningly thought this could be a good road trip with our A600.

We’ve never been down that neck of the woods with a boat on the back so thought I’d ask for some pointers in here as to where we could either take a temp visitor mooring or launch - I’d prefer the former for less hassle.

Any thoughts at all?

Cheers

Personally, I prefer the Cornish south coast for boating. For a first foray, you won't go far wrong at Mylor.

I agree with PD. Mylor is a great place, it's only 20 miles form Newquay (40 mins)

Excellent facilities, visitors pontoon (relatively cheap), great boating location.

Another vote for Mylor. Very helpful folks at the marina, plenty of trailer storage on site and a nicely protected location giving options for different weather/sea state outings.

I know we were there in 2025 with SIB rather than RIB but this gives some pointers for you...

Brilliant thanks all and a welcome ponder in these otherwise wet winter conditions.

Snap, my preference is al south coast too! Falmouth/Mylor/St Mawes are all great, Fowey potentially another option, or Penzance/Newlyn.

My wife does like the look of Falmouth, not a lot of Air B&Bs left though so will have to move fairly quickly I think wherever we end up.

Have spent all of our boating life pretty much Solent way so looking forward to this

Try this lot, they have some amazing places.

https://creeksidecottages.co.uk/loca...iday-cottages/

Also Mylor Marina itself has a row of cottages of varying sizes (some are dogs allowed if that is something you need). So handy for the parking, pontoon, cafe, evening restaurant and chandlery.

If you can't get Mylor accommodation at this point, look at Fowey which again has a great harbour with plenty of boating options and isn't that far from Newquay.

For both, I'd not be looking at the venue itself. a 10/15 minute drive North has some brilliant farm BnBs and we usually jump into one of these or Rentanna Holiday Park if large static caravans suit.

Plan C - Plymouth, only an hour to Newquay and again plenty of both boating options and places to stay.

I'd avoid teh North Coast in August, its too busy to stay, too full to park and can be horrendous to launch. Marinas are hard work and being tidal, you could spend more time on the sand then the sea.

Mylor is a great place to launch. The slipway is nice and gentle...but watch out for the drop off to the right of the slip. The office and trailer park is a couple of hundred yards down from the slip ( office up stairs of building with 3 gable ends). You have access to Carrick roads and the Roseland.
That Southern coastline is often more protected and calm compared to the Atlanic North Coast.
On the Roseland you have Gorran Haven ( great chippy and pub down there) Mevagissey....busy but worth a visit.
Penzance also has a great public slip and you have access to some of the nicest beaches in Cornwall....like Kynance cove ( stunning) also Mullion harbour is well worth a visit and has a nice little cafe and ice cream shop right by the harbour ( very special spot for me)
Enjoy
