Been up the Avon after launching from Hope Cove a couple of years back, it's a bit hairy getting up there from Bantham and is excellent for Skiing/boarding but you need to be a member of the club to do it, there's the Sloop at Bantham and the Fisherman's Rest up at Aveton Gifford at the top.

What Ribraff said - be careful entering and don't hang around on a falling tide - there isn't much water when it goes out! The Sloop is very popular and you can book which is advisable. Hope cove is not far - that's a drying harbour with another great pub. Obviously there's the Pilchard inn on Burgh Island. If you want to go further there's Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers (Plymouth Direction) but make sure you look at a chart first and make sure you have plenty of water there as well. Then there's Salcombe which has been covered on here plenty of times.

agree with Cookee and ribraff, but would like to add plymouth and the sound. Allways somewhere to go whatever the tide and weather.
Cawsands.
Mount edgecombe / barn pool
Saltash (you can tie up on the sailing club pontoon as long as you have a beer in their yacht club) you have the union jack pub close by.
Across the water is the ferry man
Fort william yard hosts a depp water little harbour, nominal fee of £5 to go alongside. There is the Bakery, Seco lounge, Italian resteraunt and river cottage resteraunt. Within walking distance Artillary arms, Butchers.
Catch the tide correctly turnchapel has a landing beach with two excellent pubs, Borringdon arms and Clovelly bay

i believe the speed limit is 8 knots up to the ski area which as said you need to be a member of to use/speed.
