Ribbing in South Cornwall

We have been going to Salcombe for our annual holiday most years but fancy a change this year. I was lookming at Looe or Polperro has anyone got any recommendations. Is launching easy? Are there any moorings available?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Fowey is another Popular destination. Looe has a public slip with ample parking (chargeable) but its tidal and only really good for a couple hours either side, There is a better slip just up from this one but it's chargeable.

Fowey has a chargeable slip but it's a very busy place with tight lanes and average parking. Your be used to that at Salcombe though!

Visitor moorings are available for all places mentioned

Take a look at the following link which has further details including contact numbers to enquire further. I live in the top of Cornwall so if I can help in any way just ask

Plymouth is also an option, free slipways and stay outside in the nice bits then run in.

Penmarlam at Bodinnick has a good slip with visitor pontoon moorings. Contact Fowey harbourmaster.

There are some really nice places within shouting distance to Plymouth, easy slips with at all tides options (unlike most of Cornwall) and plenty of yards if you don't want to drag about. Once down the estuary you haven't got to go far before you hit Kernow soil

Launching sites at all states is something we really struggle with in Cornwall, the North Coast is worse so it makes a big difference - unless Falmouth is an option

One good example is here - Hingston Down Farm

Not right by the coast but really good for Dartmoor, Bodmin Moor, Eden. The Tamar is down the road and Saltash Slip on 15 minutes away.

There are loads of other options like thsi with shouting distance - the thought of staying in Plymouth

Any where between Looe and Polkerris you shall find ample slippage. Fowey side by the ferry is free with car and trailer parking and good access. Opposite bank upstream is Mixtow/Penmarlam, bit more of a pain to get to, only because of distance from anywhere but at £9 per day seems expensive. However there is slippage, cafe, toilets and showers, parking included, flushing water and a chandlery.........so actually amazing value, and visitor moorings and bank/pontoon loading.
Polruan has a slip. Park at the top and wander down to assess access.
Polkerris slip arranged via cafe (on website) and has moorings at £5 per day. Here you get straight out onto open water.......pub and restaurant and parking, beach showers here too.
So, huge variety in this small area.
Large boats (dive and twin engines) usually launch from Fowey and Penmarlam.
The other slips are really more suited for 4-6M boats.
Plenty of temp moorings on the Fowey alongside pontoons for lunches, supplies etc. Also Royal Fowey Yacht club and RNLI are welcome stops.
Fantastic coastal runs and many sea access only beaches east or west.

There are two other useful names for the Fowey vicinity.
In Lostwithiel there is a fantastic outboard sales and service centre.
Also Ed Banyard is there...........country's finest tube service and repair facility.

Dont wish to be a "know it all" , but the slip at Fowet by the ferry aint free, you have to get a ticket from the pay and display machine (£3.50 I think), you just press the button till launch fee comes up on the display then pay. To be fair I have only been asked for my ticket once in two years but would not want anyone to get caught otu.

Nor is the parking easy...I've parked cars there in the summer months, eventually. Not sure I'd rely on getting space for car and trailer unless you are there very early. Plus, the trailer parking can be full of 'seasonal' bookings and I suspect most (all?) of the car parking spaces are too small for RIB trailer. It's a busy, busy place when the kids are off.

Better off upstream at Pen-what's-it in my view.

Falmouth and the Carrick roads?
Free Slip in Mylor, Parking is chargeable and they have just extended the Valley car park apparently. Arrive early though and you can normally park for free on the hill.

Yeah, come and see us in Looe!!! 2 Slip ways in looe, one quite big but only probably get 4 hours either side of the tide. A very good alternative that i take my boats to is Penmarlam in Fowey. £9.00 to launch and park all day, plenty of room and you can use the slip at any tide.
Looe is free to launch you just have to pay to park the car.

This would be my plan if taking the boat to Cornwall.
(Took the Scorpion there back in 2005 as a stepping off point for the Scillies)

In summary, yeah, afraid so. TBH by the time I normally get down there late afternoon in peak summer the car parks are so full the hill is often the best option, especially when cars are parked either side of the quay entrance making it hard to turn left along to the valley.

I keep thinking the Marina will lobby the council to have double yellows up the hill but until that happens I'm going to follow the if you can't beat em join em mentality and save a few quid.

Hopefully the extended valley carpark this year will improve things, I'm thinking of getting a folding bike off ebay to wiz up and down though!

If you do, would it be for hire if you're not using it? :-D
