Ribbing in Cornwall

Hi All,

A friend of mine who is also a member of this forum introduced me to RIBS last year in Weymouth he has a 6.5m Ring with a Honda 130 4 stroke and was good enough to lend me it for two weeks in the summer, we had it moored in Freshwater St Mawes. This really got me and wife well and truly hooked... surely friends don't do that sort of thing??

Anyway we decided to take the plunge and buy our own boat and picked it up from Rock Marine two weeks ago, we have both done our RYA Level 2 but were still very nervous about towing, launching and recovering as this was only covered in the classroom. So for our first launch on our own we chose and nice big slip with good road access down at Mylor. All went really well it was much easier than I thought it would be, and we have launched down there again last Sunday. I know launching and recovering don't get much easier than it is at Mylor but I live near Mevagissey and it's a bit of a drag getting there. I was curious to know what the slip at Par Docks is like, the boat is a 6.0m Ribeye and my reversing isn't that sharp! Can you pay as you dunk or do you have to be a member of any club?

If anyone has any information, or anything you wish you knew when you got your first boat, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Christian

there are a contingent from Cornwall who post on here from time-to-time, but I think they formed a splinter group and created www.cornwall247.co.uk where they have their own forum (90% of them are current or recent rib.net members - but the boundaries of acceptability may be a little wider on cornwall24/7). I am sure they will welcome you into their fold - although of course the rest of the rib.net population would be equally happy to see you post here.

Have you found Nos4r2's beginners guide thread?

Hi Storrc

Have a look on http://www.boatlaunch.co.uk for slipway details all over the country. The pictures are invaluable.

With the number of new owners coming on here I should set up a reversing school

Hi Christian,

To launch from Par Docks you need to be a member of St Austell Bay Boat Club. If you wanted to join, the next club meeting is on 13th feb at St Austell Rugby Club. The club isn't up to much but you have to be a member to use the slip.
http://81.187.239.186/sabbc/index.php

The slip itself is a bit narrow and steep but otherwise there's lots of room and secure parking where you don't have to unhitch.

Fowey's ok but can get a bit busy. A few of us do regularly launch at Mylor.

As was said earlier, most of the local boys post on http://forum.cornwall247.co.uk/

Hi Christian
As you can see from the user name I'm fairly local as well
Both Bob ( Randski) and I are St.Austell based and both launch from Par docks. Yes you do need to be a member of the St.Austell Bay Boat Club

its £15 to join and then about £85 per year to launch unlimited, parking for car and trailer is included and is very secure. The slip itself is very steep and not particularly wide but is a great facility none the less. PM me if you'd like some more details of the club, we do go out on cruises fairly regularly and link up with the Falmouth crew now and again, travelling with other Rib's has greatly increased the rib experience and of course there's a lot of info of both boat and local waters on hand, I know you'd be very welcome to join us.
regards
Jeff

Thanks for all the info guys, I think we'll be popping along to the next SABBC meeting. Par docks is sounding really good how tidal is the slip?

Nice Landy Jeff

Cheers

Par is unusable for an hour either side of low water, that pic is taken pretty much as soon as launching was possible, the other great thing about Par is there are no cross winds to contend with.

(note to self musn't stay logged on and leave room with youngest son around! (unnecessary quote removed!))

Good to see a contingent of Carrick ribbers! We have been boating in the Carrick Roads for nearly 20 years now. We have a holiday place between Mylor and Restronguet. Should be down there at Easter time if any of you are around! We can normally be seen anywhere between the Pandora at Restronguet, the Ferry Boat at Helford, the Chain Locker at Falmouth and the Rising Sun at St Mawes!
