donegaldan has. He took his SR4 from Greencastle to Islay and back on a day trip. Raised a few eyebrows on the pontoon in Port Ellen

I use my Zodiac Pro 420 to go up to 13 miles offshore. However this is normally only when with other ribs., otherwise on my own i tend not to go anymore than 9 to 10.

Only ever go out that far when the forecast is perfect. Any sign that the wind is getting up then i'm on my way back in as i use the North Sea.

Latest trip was 60nm out next to the shipping lanes, (not in them) watching the tankers go past as its a very busy stretch of water going up to the Thames.

I also have flares, handheld radio, gps, compass, phone and have just ordered a fixed DSC VHF as these trips are becomming more frequent.

Depends what you class as small. I took my Humber Destroyer 5.3 from SW England to Guernsey and back in April this year. Maybe a 5.3 doesn't count.

Have taken my Zodiac 4.7m from Port Logan to Donaghadee a distance 20 miles each way, so 10 miles from land.
No problem on a good day.

Ive done round britain (over the top) in a Ribcraft 4.8, Round Ireland in a 6.5 Redbay. The best trip was a few years ago around Scotland in a 4.8 Ribquest, fantastic scenery and then when far offshore, the boat was fantastic in the rough, far more fun than in a big expensive boat.

I used to take my thundercat over to Guernsey regularly one up with a Hand held VHF, Flares and Charts etc, If you have the right kit, are responsible with the weather and your personal abilities, you can reach fantastic distances in small boats and often do more and have more fun than larger boats, there are many advantages to small boats.

My father has just taken a 6 meter Humber to the Arctic Circle from Scotland, he said the trip was the best he has ever done in his life!

Recently (2 weekends ago) took my Brig Eagle 380 and 3 passengers over to Jura (Craighouse) from Kilberry (Port Ban). 12.5 miles - 25 mins. Flat calm on the way over, a little choppy on the way back but great fun.

Pics of my mate with her before we set off, and my wee boy relaxing on the way over.

We did Cherbourg - Alderney in our Zodiac 4.2m, pretty arduous but it just comes down to planning the tides right, in a small boat you can begin to feel very vulnerable very quickly, something that in a 6m+ is a rare occurance.
