Ocean Pro 6.3

Hello all,

I’m hoping to get back on the water soon after a few years absence.

I’m currently interested in a Humber Ocean Pro 6.3 with a Suzuki 140.
I previously owned a 7m ocean pro with a 200 Etec, so I’m now wondering if the 6.3 is a bit underpowered with a 140?.

Can anyone with a similar combination comment on the expected performance.

It’ll mainly be used with 2 adults and 2 kids for general cruising.

I had a 6meter Humber Destroyer with a Yamaha F115 and it had more than sufficient power. It’s narrower than the Ocean Pro but it was an older and very solidly built hull. Single console, inboard 120l tank it would comfortably exceed 40 knots in good conditions and had lots of punch in the rough. I’d expect your potential combination would be very effective.

Depends what you want from it?
I’ve got exactly that set up. 2008 boat that I bought in 2009.
Had Avon and an osprey previously that were a metre shorter with 35hp more but the Humber is a better set up in general.
Dryer boat, good fuel consumption, will do well over 40knots with 4 up, and it’ll cruise for hours at 30 plus knots in most seas. Very capable boat but just keep your eye on the finishes. There seems to be a massive variation from boat to boat.

Thanks for replies chaps, I’d be happy with the levels of performance you’ve stated.
Being able to cruise at around 25kts is good enough for me.

cjj216, what kind of average fuel economy do you get on a cruise?

My last decent run was Whitehaven to Douglas and back. Total round trip was 82 nautical miles.
Head wind and quite choppy on way out. Averaged about 20knots with lots of on/off throttle.
On way back we had following sea and the wind had died down so averaged over 30knots.
Tides weren’t really in our favour at any point and we were 3 up setting off with 150litres of fuel.
Emptied 1 x 75litre tank and changed over to 2nd tank within site of Whitehaven.
I’d say on that day we got pretty much 1Nautical mile per litre.
Considerably better than any of my previous 2 strokes.
What’s that?...£33 each return to Douglas? Bargain!

I had a 6.3 great boat, preferred it to the 6.5 upawards which is a different hull altogether
The early ones (mid 90s) had a lower deck level and were even better but Humber raised the deck to obtain more deck space.
Regarding finish and fit out - mine was ordered as a bare hull with strict instructions not to drill or screw anything to the boat other than the towing eye at the front!!

I Skipper a commercial seal watching trip where the coded rib is an Ocean Pro 6.3 with a Honda 140. We always have a Skipper and one Crew plus a maximum of eight passengers normally. The boat is a dream to drive and on occasions, when conditions allow, we’ve had it up to 30knots quite easily. It may go slightly faster but it’s not a thrill ride so I didn’t push it.
The only thing that I’d change is the transom height. We launch unloaded and backwards into the tide so if there’s a slight chop you can have a bit of water sloshing around inside the boat that’s come over the transom. It’s never been a huge issue. If the boat can take ten people with that engine combination, I reckon you’d be fine with your family.

30kn 10up on a 6.3 with a lardy Honda 140 is impressive, in more ways than one.

Sorry typo on the HP, it’s 150 not 140. It was dead flat with the engine gradually trimmed out until the GPS read that speed. I presume the GPS is as accurate as anything else.
My own boat has a 200hp 2 stroke and wouldn’t achieve that 10 up.

Depends if you adjusted for current and wind. Generally an average of two runs in opposite directions would be regarded as reasonably accurate.

Pulling an extra 10hp out of the hat is deffo slight of hand

That and the poor old suzuki is reckoned to be well under it's 140hp rating - there could now be a gap of 20hp in the comparison. Not a huge margin but enough to make the exercise worthless, IMO.
