Mariner 75hp......and we're off!

Ever wondered just how heavy that outboard is on the back of your rib? Bloody heavy I can report.
My tornado is kept in a storage site and I don't have a garage so any work I do has to be done outside, ok in the summer but who wants to be spannering in the cold? What I do have is a big shed 10x8 with electric and a 2000kw heater. I decided that as the outboard will have to come off at some point to get the tubes fitted I may as well take it off this winter. I don't have an engine crane or any other lifting equipment......what i do have is an estate car and a 14 year old son. The disconnection of control's was straight forward and took 10 minutes, likewise the transom bolts came out easy too. I reversed my car to the back of my boat and put a strap around the powerhead and did a slip hitch around the A frame. I layed a large foam bench seat pad half in half out of the boot and with help from my son we lowered the outboard and slid it into my car.....easy. To put in my shed would be the reverse......how hard could it be..... ---------ing hard ( insert your own expletives). The motor slid out no bother but standing it up to go on the engine mount that i had built was another matter. So to create a picture for you, the outboard was lay on my wooden shed floor and my Son and I were lifting from the heavy end...I expected the skeg to dig in and we would lift the outboard into a vertical position.....NO! it just slid along the floor. I put a matt under the skeg.....nope just slid along the floor. So i put a wet matt underneath...still slid.....rubber matt......same ......screwed matt to floor....slid off the matt arghhhhh. Two red faces and next to no energy left, we still had to raise the motor off the floor. I screwed a piece of wood to the floor and the skeg slid up to it and finally we had enough purchase to lift the motor. One hour later having made a few adjustments to my temporary engine mount and there it was sitting pretty ready to be worked on.
Back in the summer I tested the the outboard was worth spending time and money on and as the compression was good across all three cylinders and there was a spark I decided to see if it would fire up.....and it did.
My full plan is to do a full refurbishment of both Motor and Rib, but to keep the feel of a rib made in the 90's. The motor is in pretty good nick with next to no rust on any of the components. A slight weep on the hydraulic trim ram is the only fault I have found.....so far. I'm not sure of the outboards age exactly but mid to late 90's seems about right.
As the motor is old I decided to remove the water jacket cover. I was expecting to see the water channels all furred up, but amazingly it was as clean as a whistle. I removed all 24 bolts and most had fallen victim to the galvanic effect of steel on aluminium but a quick nip to tighten before gentle but firm pressure to remove had them all removed......except one (why is it always just one) it snapped off.....flush. Tried to drill it and tap a stud tool into it but I felt that the tap was going to snap....I didn't fancy removing that too. One diamond encrusted drill bit and more hours than I dare mention later and I now have a 10mm thread not 8mm ( no problem I had a bolt that fit perfect.
The next job will be a carburetor rebuild and clean x 3. Next up will be a full service including gear oil and impeller and anodes. Fresh paint and new original decals to finish..
I'm in my element doing this project and as I don't have a time frame, I'm under no pressure to get it finished. One thing I won't do is go into debt to get the Rib on the water...I will just plod along learning as I go.....I have a saying " you can either be Rich or Resourceful n I ain't Rich) . For those interested I will post updates every now and then including pictures (if i can remember how to do it on here)

If anyone can recommend a place to get service kit for older outboards that would be great....I found a couple on ebay but as I'm looking for gaskets (water jacket x2) gaskets and seals for carbs etc I feel they are quite expensive...for a bit of card.
Cheers and Happy new year to you all.

I have read about this on several forums and whilst they all agree the only difference between the 75 and 90 is the carbs what they can't agree on is if the ecu is compatible. What's your take on it?

Put it like this - if Davie doesn't know - then it's not worth knowing.

If it’s a carbed engine, the ECU can’t be that sophisticated, I’m surprised it’s actually got one.

Had a bit more of a poke around today and can confirm no ecu found.

So the part I really don't understand is if the carbs are different in what way are they different? The carb kit's tend to say to fit 75hp & 90hp which would suggest the bodies are the same at least. Is it just jet's and reed's?

Don't know if this might be of any use to see differences in part numbers:

You need to fit carbs and advance ignition 3 or 4 degrees. There is a thread somewhere on here about doing this or google it. I'm near Dundee but can post. £90 inc vat and post.

I had this done on a pair of 2006 75s on Viper. Worked really well.

Did you notice a big difference in petrol consumption?

Should only notice if using the extra power.
Might be hard not to take advantage

If anything fuel consumption was better, she got on the plane easier and spent less time at the top end of rev range where it really hurts.

Obviously depends on the boat but mine was underpowered before so much after the upgrade was able to throttle back a bit and sit in a much better area for fuel consumption.
