Macmillan Coastal Challenge

Hello fellow ribnetters!

This year 2015 Meand a friend billy are refurbishing a plan craft stringray to circumnavigate the uk in via the Caledonian canal.

We are looking to raise £18000 for Macmillan Cancer Support!

The rebuild of the boat has just kicked off and we are looking for as many parts to be donated towards the rebuild as possible.

We have come up with a small list of this we need donating to us for the restoration.

A Trailer
Wood (ply for new floor)
An Engine
Paint
2 shock asborbing seats
Fuel Tanks we are looking to carry 150litres in multiple tanks.
Navigation equiptment
Stainless Steel A-frame
Navigation Lights
Accessory Lights
Marine Batterys
Wiring
Electric Components-bilge pump etc
Cleats and various accessories

If You have anything else you feel you could support us please do let us know.

Another being blunt here, I'll wish you the best of luck with your quest but I think it's too soon after the Macrib build thread which was almost identical to your idea, I to would ask, are you selling the boat afterwards for the same charity, perhaps this one might be best on the boat mad forum, as we've already done this and our pockets are still recovering, also it is a hard boat and to my knowledge they haven't done anything like this

Good Luck there. Have you spoken to your employers ref giving etc. Sunseeker etc as I'm sure they will help also!!

Thanks for the responses guys, we will be selling the boat at the end of the challenge and the proceeds will go towards macmillan cancer support. My employer has been a great support, he has given us the boat and lots of materials and his time for the tebuild oh and a space inside the workshops do complete the work .....

To be fair doing it in a 14" shallow V speedboat will make it a proper challenge. Although your web site suggests that you've got something a bit bigger now? Either way, have you got any offshore experience in these sorts of boat?

I also see you're planning to call in at Bangor. Crossing the Irish sea is quite ambitious, will you have a support boat with you?

And there was I assuming they meant the Bangor in Wales.

Yes, it could be. It would make for a long day up to Oban though, and it will be just as exposed assuming they pass to the west of the Isle of Man.

Just a quick random question, do charity's ever check the use of their name?

I cant see any mention of selling the rib after the event on the website - maybe i am being cynical but getting a rib and parts donated to you that's capable of a trip like this is going to be some very expensive kit..;.

Why do you need a trailer if its just going on a trip around UK and then sold? seems to be an expensive item that isn't 100% required to complete the trip? Would be like asking for a free Range Rover to tow it?

But good luck, and I look forward to reading the build thread and then the final trip write up.

We have had it checked out by Macmillan head office, they are fully aware of what we intend to do.

I have off shore experience in a 14ft Shakespeare and various ribs (although I know the boat isnt a rib)

We are fully aware its going to be hard, but thats what makes it a challenge isn't it?

Will post about the rebuild, but heres what we plan to do to the boat.
-increase the free-board by 3 inches
-add extra buoyancy in the hull
-re-enforce the hull with added stringers

The route we have on the website is only a draft one, we might still change it!

I really wouldn't attempt it in that small speedboat but I wish you all the best and for calm seas.

You are both working at sunseeker as apprenticies arn't you ? Why not try and butter them up, what with all the negative press about sunseeker *** Words removed by Admin *** would have thought they would jump at the chance of a worthy cause helping the old brand image and free PR ? Surely they could fund/sponser the boat and fuel and kit entirely and get a semi decent Rib of 7M + (plenty of good examples for sale around poole and christchurch).

Then that would be a good reason to sing and dance on the quayside (sorry could not help myself, relates to a recent negative news article about sunseeker).

All the best anyway and let us all know as your building how its going, I may have some stuff kicking around my garage, I will look at the weekend.

Only Bill is at Sunseekers now, I'm working for Poole Boat Services.

We have tried Sunseeker in the past for sponsorship but we had no joys, we will try again in the next few weeks.

Realistically, have you got someone paying for your fuel? It's not a cheap trip to make.

I think thats the hard part - getting the funding for fuel separate from the actual charity fund.

I would happily throw a few quid in the bucket for the charity, but not so happy about my hard earned money paying the fuel for you to have a 'jolly'

Yamaha did this in three small speed boats back in the late 60's early 70's as a promotional voyage.. Our very own Bill Brown was on the trip and I always remember the story of them leaving Ramsgate in crap conditions, the boat capsizing, being towed back into Ramsgate drained out and them setting off again a couple of hours later. There is no reason with good weather and a reasonable amount of good seamanship why this trip cannot be done but you will need big bucks to make it happen. It could take a week or three months, who knows? Alan P

Guess you have to make sure there are no chinks in your armour so to speak - every possible scenario is considered and mitigated , redundancy of systems and everything is running as it should all the time and fix it as soon as it doesn't so it doesn't escalate.
