Kill cord morons

Just got back from a regatta in the Caribbean where many of the crews (on big boats) are collected from the dock. Checking out the ribs coming in and out while waiting for my ride I estimate that over 50% of the drivers were NOT wearing the kill cord (which often could be seen dangling free). This is taking into account ribs I counted with (invisible) proximity kill cords. Bear in mind most if not all of these ribs are associated with high profile professionally run vessels whose policy and SOP is supposedly set in stone. ( ie all drivers are required to wear the kill cord).

I was stunned.

Often "professionals" in any sport seem most lax with the safety rules.

It's not just there - sit on the wall by the Old Fort in Seaview and watch the DFL's / Second homies come into the yacht club slip - substantial boats and outboards, often driven by the teenage kids........then try to see how many are wearing the cords - very few unfortunately

Same story on pleasure trips in Cuba. When questioned the crew just laughed "Yeah man".....all passengers were offered old LJ's, but the crew didn't bother with either

How many motorists do you still see using mob phones whilst driving?

IMHO, it's not worth getting uptight about what others do, as annoying as it may be.

Use good practice yourself, and keep your loved ones as safe as you can.

To be honest when I'm tootling around pontoons looking for a place to dock I usually remove the kill cord from my leg so that I can react quickly without risking engine shutdown. But I am aware that to wear a killcord in these exotic places isn't considered cool.

I lost 2 family members in a car crash caused by a prick on a mobile phone. "getting uptight" is a feckin understatement to describe how i feel if i see some twat with a handheld phone while driving

Yup.

I spent 6 months unable to work a few years back because of the same-stupid woman sending a text message whilst driving at 60mph.She didn't even brake when she hit the back of a van. The pair of them locked together hit my vehicle.

She was still holding the phone with the half written message when I dragged her out of the smoking wreck.

unfortunatley there's a lot of them about who choose to ignore the danger of using a phone in a vehicle. There is increasing evidence to suggest that hands free phone use is just as dangerous. My employer has banned the use of hands free whilst in control of a vehicle with the penalty of disciplinary action for those who ignore.

Yep, even the dive boat crew didn't use them or L/J's, the trim wasn't working on one of the engines which meant it had to be dropped manually by someone sitting on the transom whilst underway.

Yes....I went out with our search and rescue crew 2 weeks back.
A couple returning to their sailboat in their dingy slipped and fell into the water.
No kill cord used, dingy circled and made 3 deep lacerations in the womans head. She is recovering, but it could have been far worse, and it could have been avoided.

A good few years on and off with ribs and I have maybe wore the cord 3 times, generally if an 8 or above. Close a couple of times, but if you have no strength in your hands/thighs , then you should not be at sea.

7 years on fishfarm with open voeboats with twin 50's , and never. It would be too unsafe to wear the cord. Yes, 'unsafe'. Utterly ridiculous to make a song and safety dance, huh, safety dance, about it.



It is like safety belts in cars, deaths went down whilst long term injuries of being minced for the rest of your life went through the roof. As you might've done. But that's not the point.
