6 knot speed limit if I'm not mistaken

I'd have thought you have better salty water opportunities near you but depends what you are after...?

Hi Jeff, I know it's an old post but did you ever go to Kielder water?

I grew up sailing there - 6 knot speed limit is correct. It's a great place to sail, picturesque with some nooks and crannies to explore in a smallish boat. Suppose it would be interesting for a day or so in a RIB. Its deep, so pretty cold in the winter, the midge in June/sept can be horrendous on a calm day (usually too hot for them in Jul/Aug).

Interesting wildlife wise you might see Ospreys or other smallish birds of prey but thats probably about it.

For facilities there's a visitor's centre with restaurant at a place called Tower Knowe, and an okay pub with swimming pool and cabins/campsite at a place called Leaplish (where the slipway is).

I'd say for a boating trip you'd be entertained for a day or so - fishing is fairly popular. But the strength is the variety of stuff. Northumberland is a pretty unspoilt part of the world with some great hiking etc, Kielder has some of the darkest skies in the Europe which can be pretty spectacular. The forest has some great downhill mountain biking routes etc, and there's some great pubs - I'd recommend the Holly Bush Inn in a village called Greenhaugh.

Your then not miles from some pretty cool coastal boating to the East - Farne Islands etc.

Yea went there in summer flys were horrendous just been again two weeks ago for a ride round no flys this time as said got everything you need but not for me with the boat. There’s a drive about 12 miles long which is forestry roads that’s great but it was shut this time. We stayed at Hexham if you’re into Roman history it’s fascinating vondalanda being exceptional for info.

Thanks Fergus. I lived in Hexham for 5 years and explored a lot of Northumberland, but for some reason never went to Kielder or the hiked on the Cheviots. Just wondered what it would be like for a long weekend in the caravan and taking a SIB out on the water for a couple of leisurely days.

Why not for you with the boat Jeff? To small? Not enough to explore?

To be honest Steve I love the sea you can go where many don’t not only have I made a very good living from it it’s given me years of pleasure above and below the water. Rivers lakes are ok just there’s not an attraction for me.

That sounds fair enough and I must admit I also prefer the sea.

I've just read the rules and regulations - the do's and do not's, and it doesn't make me want to drive all the way there when Anglesey and the Lakes are much easier to get to.

I'd thought about Whitby (Sandsend looks OK to beach launch?) and Beadnell looks good too.

St Abbs is that Eyemouth?

Yea sandsend ok but if there’s surf tricky and shallow, runswick further up is ok too again shallow. St abbs just up from Eyemouth it has a good slip the coast around the head is beautifull.

There’s a small slip at petticowick around the head you can land at for a picnic.
