Diving Thread.

Seeing that RIBs and Diving go together and there are a number of divers on the forums.

We can swop RIB and diving stories,Dive sites, origanise Ribnet dives etc

Only an idea!

I was a very keen diver for ten years until the day I realised I enjoyed the boat trips more than the dives. As result I bought my own RIB last winter and haven't rolled off it once yet in scuba gear but have spent many happy hours driving it about, fishing from it and kneeboarding ( did some nice Liveaboard diving in the Maldives at Xmas though ).

Me last week in Scapa Flow Orkney ..... not a RIB in site. I did see a few small boats, used to be the pride of the German Navy.

Scotland looks very nice but I think the weather has to be right too.
I remember once in the UK I went diving in Stoney Cove when it was snowing. It was not enjoyable at all and I was thinking that people must be masochists to enjoy this in these conditions (it was packed by the way). Also have dived in Wales (a place where is a sank sub with an aeroplane at 55/60 mtrs. We were making a 50 mtr dive to see it from the distance and take photos - NEVER saw it). Vis was at 1 mtr if that, it was blowing a gale and raining hard, sea was as dark as it could be. I thought exactly what I thought in Stoney Cove. But when the weather is nice and it had been in many of my dives is very enjoyable and you can take very nice underwater photos and videos that unfortunately do not have in Greece but in the UK.
We usually go diving in the Red Sea (Sharm, Hurghada or Safaga- going there every Easter for the last 10 years) and the Caribs (mainly Grand Cayman cause of the kids). All these places are fantastic!! Photos to follow

But all in all it will be brilliant

if we can arrange a dive in the UK and if the day is also nice it will be great too.

Kathleen, Sharm IMHO is now quite spoiled with all the hotels and the night clubs. Nothing to do with Egypt.
We now prefer to go to Hurghada, which although is getting spoiled too is still a fishing village. We usually stay in the Interconti or the Marriott (it was only the Sheraton, The Sonesta and the Hilton in the past) for 3/4 days and then we charter a boat with just the crew and a dive master and we go around for 5-6 days.
There is a dive place in Hurghada that is called The Aquarium (near Giftoun Island) the depth there ranges from 1-20 mtrs. Is excellent diving and snorkelling place, no currents (there are near and about Giftoun Island due to the tides and you can do a fast drift dive around the island), and my son when he was young and my daughter now enjoy it immensely! We usually drive from Cairo as is quite nice to see the countryside. It takes about 5-6 hours. We also arrange safaris with the Bedouins and we sleep in tents and ride on Camels. Is very very nice. There is also a bit further SSE a place called Shark City and is an experience of a lifetime to dive it with the sharks ranging from nurse to grey and silver tip to hummer heads.
Safaga is another not still known dive destination in Egypt. Is near to the Sudanese boarders and is a bit dangerous (well never anything has happened but the Egyptians think that there is always the chance and the hotels, like they use to do in Hurghada, turn all lights off after sun down), but is a very nice and VERY unspoiled place also with fascinating sea.
Well, I suppose that these are some of the benefits (cause the rest is hustle and stress) of having 3 offices in Egypt

Personally I wouldn't dive somewhere like Stoney Cove if you paid me

The weather is good up here a lot more than you think, all three trips were in the last couple of months along with others in between.
The only bad thing is the winter, not because it is particularly bad most of the time but because there is little daylight and not a lot of nightlife. Winters are for indoor hobbies

Having been to the Red Sea I would have to say that the west coast of Scotland in places is far superior

I have only ever dived properly (excluding snorkelling)in the Red Sea and in caves in the UK - when I get my RIB I intend to get back into it.

A mate of mine dives all over the world - he has been to the Red Sea - the maldives - you name it he's been there - he reckons his 2 favourite places are West Wales and Scotland - if he hadn't been so experienced I would have thought he was making it up but he assures me it is true!

I spent last weekend diving off Cape Wrath. One of the dives was Duslic Rock which is about 1/2 mile north of the lighthouse. This was the best scenic dive I have done anywhere in the world. Swarms of fish circling, lobsters wandering about, Octopuses, Dog fish, lots of life. You name it, it was there. All in 40m+ visibility.
Add to all this the exclusivity of diving these areas and you have the best diving in the world bar none.
