irish sea crossing

Living on the Isle of Man, I wish to purchase a RIB to use for family coastal use with occaisional crossings to England, Scotland and Ireland. What size boat and engine would people recommend? It has been suggested a minimum of 5.8m and 90HP.

That sounds about right to me -- a RIB that size would certainly be up to the job but I wouldn't go any smaller. I suggest that you fit the largest fuel tank that you can though, as boats this size often don't have enough fuel capacity for serious cruising and refuelling from jerry cans at sea is a real pain!

If you can stretch to it, a RIB a bit larger will be more comfortable and you're less likely to outgrow it in your first season . . .

If your're interested in buying in Dublin and making your first crossing back to the IOM from here give me a shout at maoshea@indigo.ie

The Irish Sea is rarely calm and the short sharp seas can be uncomfortable in a small boat.
Go for a 6 metre or 6.5 with a 115 outboard. E mail me if you wish - I am based in Peel.
