Imaginitive alternatives to flare box cages?

Hi all,

Looking for some ideas for A-Frame storage - I've seen the stainless flarebox cages, but wondered if anyone had come up with some clever "hack" using bits & pieces from Wilko, B & Q and Ikea?!!

U-bolts and a bit of imagination I'm sure could come up with something! I might have a wander around Ikea one day to see what I can come up with, but wondered if anyone had examples already?

Cheers!

Bear in mind that whatever you come up with, will take a fair hammering. Half way up the A frame isn’t the kindest place on a RIB. What looks like a nice solid job on the drive, may not last long the first time it meets a head sea.

Fair point! Although based on discussions this weekend it would appear we are going to be fairweather boaters for the forseeable.... as SWMBO has made it very clear that if she can't wear t-shirt/shorts, or a wetsuit, she's not interested!!

It doesn’t have to be bad weather to hit rough seas. Try going around Portland Bill or South Stacks on a Spring tide, rain or shine.

I hope you have the blue and white stripe deck cushions on order.

Why on the A frame? Lack of floor room?

You could strap a flare jar on the deck behind seats or against transom.

What do you want to keep in it? you could store flares (I'd go for an LED not pyro and a couple of floating orange smoke) anywhere handy, as long as everyone on board knows what is where.

I keep flares/fire extinguisher/first aid kit/tools in mine. All the stuff you might need in a hurry & don’t want to be rummaging around for.

PD - you keep your fire extinguisher in a box strapped to the a frame that sits over the thing most likely to be on fire?

Personally Not a fan of too much extra weight on the extreme rear of the Boat or indeed Transome/A-frame which can add to poor balance especially in knarley condions....the smaller the RIB the MORE it is effected.
Extinguisher in purpose made recessed holder in Transom...Flares in "suicide seat" both centre of Boat and easy if not instant access.
Weight distribution and secure stowage coupled with quick easy access is always worth thorough consideration...especially where the above are concerned....
Along... I'd say with the Anchor..Chain...and Warp!

There’s another one in the console.

This thread has reminded me of the banter years ago between Ribnet and Boatmad, where 'we' we accused of being 'preppers' who'd head out to sea on a calm sunny day in full drysuit and helmet with a multitool on our belt and a Bowie knife clenched in our teeth.

Can we link this thread to the one about what spares and tools we carry please.

Nasher.

It was more for storing smaller things like a drybag with car keys, phones, towels etc.

Also maybe a picnic, stuff like that that.

It's a 3.8m boat with a jockey console so space on deck is tight, hence I was thinking of getting as much off deck as possible.

I manage to fit loads in dry bags in front of the console. I also have a suicide seat which opens and that space is not very useful underway. Have you got empty space in the console that is just awkward to get to? Have a look as some of the small hatches dinghy sailers can use which have a dry bag on the back. Could be good for keys, phones etc. Not the same volume as a flare box obviously. Perhaps a bow bag would work for securing dry bag with towels etc. Or have a look at the way d-class store their kit with a little enclosure right up the bow. There’s someone here who has that on their sib. It’s one of the more prolific sib posters so shouldn’t be too hard to find (Jeff?)
