If I wanted a new RIB....

A situation has appeared whereby I might be able to sell my RIB for a decent price, I hadn't been planning to so I hadn't really thought about replacements but I need to think about it fairly quickly to make a decision on whether it is worthwhile or not.

So, what should I have on the shortlist? I have a Destroyer at the moment and am generally happy with the size vs performance as I can launch and recover it single handed which is essential. Looking 5.5m to 6.0m size, more likely the lower end to keep the price and running costs down.

Shortlist at the moment consists of Destroyer/Ocean Pro, Vipermax and maybe XS, anything else that is worth looking at? Good value is essential (if it is too expensive I couldn't do it so while I'd love a Redbay with twins, or that Parker 630 with a cabin on, reality is I probably can't afford it unless they cost a lot less than I think).

Suggestions please

RIBase
Stephen you have mentioned all the usual suspects. If you are happy with your Humber then why not stay with them? Being a poud Ribcraft owner I wonder why you have not mentioned them as they are among the best!!

How important is a road legal trailer to you? If the answer is 'Not very', then Bedajim's Vmax could be a very, very good buy.

I assume shipping halfway round the world is part of this equation? - In which case does overall weight come into play?

Also, bearing in mind your location, would twin 50 / 60s be appropriate?

Weight is not an issue, cubic measurement is the killer as the freight is likely to be £4000 or so for a RIB on a trailer.

Trailer .... erm .... needs to be as road legal as my trailer is but I suppose it needs to be able to get to Marchwood docks somehow and then do 40 miles from the arriving port here to 'home'. Home to wetness and back again is only a couple of miles at low speed so after the initial trip, if it has wheels and a hook it will do

Ribcraft I think are rather more expensive? but I will have a look at their site on the weekend.

Are the above mentioned Vmaxes advertised on here?

I think I would prefer a single plus aux as the main potential hazard here is rope/net discarded from fishing vessels and ending up with two engines tied together isn't much help

It would be worth looking closely at say a humber quote and similar ribcraft quote, we were surprised at how similar they were when other items were included on Humber quote thus making what looked a lot cheaper even itself out so that Ribcraft and Humber were similar price for similar spec. Ribcraft are doing more package/stock boats now.

Interms of build quality Ribcrafts is excellent, the steel work especially.

So have you decided against a giant wheely bin then?

But for the moment the old Humbug will soldier on hopefully with fewer problems than I have had with it

Not necessarily

I just know what I want if I did go down that route!

OK there are a few options on the table now, some second hand and some new. Nothing ruled out yet, and I do love Vipermaxes

Of the new options, I have some very interesting quotes from Humber and Ribcraft. XS has been ruled out because, well, if the sums stack up to mean I have that much money it will cover the Ribcraft 585 or one of the Vmaxes.

Looking specifically at the Humber option (because it's the best value new one) - in practical seaworthiness terms is there a lot of difference between the 5.5m and the 5.8m Destroyers? Strikes me that it's only a foot of boat so I wonder how much difference there is in choppy F4-F5 type conditions. Obviously the 5.8 will be better but how much?

I know the general logic says buy the biggest boat you can afford but the counter argument is that one of the things that controls the amount of ribbing I do is the operating cost, and so a smaller and cheaper to operate boat would probably mean I used it more and enjoyed it more, plus it would be easier to handle and easier to fit under cover if I needed to work on it. If there was a 5% difference in comfort I could live with it, if it was 25% I probably couldn't.

Any thoughts from those who might have tried both sizes please?

Price, old chap, simple as that. The other bits of the "how much money do I need" equation are not yet settled but the quote I got from Humber was excellent value!
