Identifying material of painted tubes

Hi,

I need to identify what material my Avon Searider tubes are made from. Only problem is they have been painted. Previous owner is unsure.

I have just bought the rib and its my first so I'm quite keen to glue on some extra pieces for 'D' rings and repaint it as some bits have started flaking.

I didn't want to assume but I know Avons are usually Hypalon.

Is it worth sanding the exposed bits to see how it reacts or is there another really clever way that someone knows of?

I've added an picture as an attachment if it helps.

Thanks J

RIBase
All Seariders are hypalon - so follow instructions on Polymarine's site for gluing. Ambient air termperature, a clean working environment and ventilation are absolute key to a successful fit.

Regards gluing 'D' rings, then you will need to remove the painted area completely by sanding and degrease with solvent or the attachment will fail.

There's a mixed response to painting RIBS, with the preferred approach to avoid like the plague, but take your point if the whole boat is already painted, then not sure you have much choice.

Interestingly when reading West Systems G-flex 655 epoxy instructions they also recommend it for attaching tube fittings, it's that flexible. It wouldn't matter if PVC or Hypalon. Just throwing this option in there..
