Hefty speeding fine on The Dart.

I see a 29yr old guy in a RIB has just been slapped with a fine of over £4500 for flashing past the Noss Marina at 28kts in the dark last September.

Hopefully we don't need to start a collection for anyone here!

I'm always interested in the area we go on a day out the fines for jet skis (usually) exceeding the harbour limits are many times higher than speeding fines in a car.

I guess the fines are big to compensate for not being able to give points or remove your license. Ironically, he was probably over the limit for driving too, a lot of the 'speed + dark' cases are.

The total amount is not just the fine - but also the prosecution costs, which are much higher if police/cps are not pursuing you. IIRC a guilty plea in E&W for CPS cases is a fixed £85 costs, but for other departments can be thousands.

The start of my enthusiasm for the sea was being allowed to accompany my late father on trips as a child and teen. Weekends and holidays he skippered private craft in the 30-55ft range for a few folks on a casual basis. These opportunities came his way for two main reasons... he was a really competent paper chart navigator both day and night but importantly he was virtually teetotal so while the owners and their friends/family would be enjoying a good few tipples over a weekend he'd be reliable getting them back in the home port ready to scoot off and make work Monday morning.
