The Workboat Code (WBC2), which was published in December 2018, is applicable to all new workboats and pilot boats designed / built after this date. It can also be used for existing vessels. It is an updated standard to the requirements of the technical annex of MGN 280.

WBC2 contains

Additional references to the RCD and ISO 12215

Additional guidance on the carrying of fuel for outboards

Additional requirements for kill cords

The weight of person used for the stability tests has increased

Additional guidance on tenders and daughter craft

Guidance on operating outside the hours of daylight

There is nothing in the technical annex to MGN 280 relating to RIB's that doesn't appear in the WBC2.

The technical annex to MGN 280 is still valid for vessels designed / built before December 2018 but if anyone is looking at coding now, it would be better to look at the WBC2 document than the technical annex to MGN 280.

All IMHO

Hi Guy. Was looking at boats mentioned earlier in posts. All appear to be non workboat bar military. The workboat code is again due an uplift to3 and under considerable discussing with many industry representatives.

You cannot apply workboat code to leisure vessels coded under MGN280 but they can have a workboat endorsement added for a specific set of taskings

I would suggest anyone coding a leisure boat for normal charter ops does not try to match WB2 as you probably won’t pass the survey as totally separate ops and rules. Your surveyor would point you at the correct route

Not on workboat coding. They are set as you say for workboats not for the standard leisure boat inspected and coded to work for charters . The view was the discussion from aft or forward .

No charter leisure coded vessel all sub 24 metre, works from standards set in WB codes , unless you see otherwise I cannot see how linked as two totally separate standards and operations hence workboat was first legislative code and again now under review for WB3 -

So no difference on views on a workboat, just that majority of leisure charter cannot reach the standard of WB as not designed for it as you would know

My original question was meant as a reference to craft design considerations rather than the letter of the law. The law often depends on who your expert witness is. One of my friends is an expert witness in many cases and he's very very good at persuading the court in favour of whoever is paying him, whilst knowing that often, the side that's paying him is in the wrong. He is quite in demand. He usually instructs the lawyers on what to ask him and how to ask it, too.

I always stand up on my rib whenever the bow sticks up before it planes even if there is no one around and even if not much of my visibility is obstructed. Better to be safe than sorry. Half-submerged logs, swimmers, kayakers, who knows what are just not worth taking a risk.

Relative to rib seating, I don't like the idea of having passengers behind me. Kids and dogs frequently do stupid things, so best to be able to keep an eye on them at all times.

Thank you for posting the jet pack video. Wow! Hoping the soldier had an inflatable life jacket on in case the jet pack lands him in the water. Video was a relatively flat day, which was good for practice and scary enough if you ask me.

God speed to the wonderful people who defend our countries!
