Running out of daylight around here is treacherous. Pot dhans litter the place.

My primary reason for not ribbing after dark. Flippin' pot buoys, or lack thereof.

I've 'ad the things in broad daylight!

Half sunk milk cartons or yards of floating polyprop. Trashed the ally prop on the SR.

There's an article in this months RYA magazine regarding fishing gear. It's now a legal requirement that all fishing gear is clearly marked, this is supposed to be policed & enforced by ICFA, but it's an impossible task & a low priority. Like the others, I'd cut it. (After I'd pulled it up to see what was on the end)

Your words I'd cut it AFTER I'd pulled it up to see what was on the end, if it causes a problem ring the fisheries, and my name ain't boy OK son

Yes dad☺️
No point cutting it before you've looked, anything in a pot would die a miserable & wasted death. Used to see loads of abandoned pots with dead creatures inside when I was diving.

Does the "law" saying must be clearly marked not also say must not tamper with or lift anyone else's gear?

Dunno about that, but if it's wrapped around your prop.............

I once picked up a floating line round the lower unit of the o/b. The first thing I knew was the speed dropping off and when I looked aft there were about five buoys/flags following me like the barrels in Jaws!

I suspect a lot of private / amateur pots have their lines cut by commercial fisherman without a second thought.

Wonder if you can come up with a "stealth pot" where you deploy a pot with a float installed but not released (i.e. nothing on the surface at all), come back later, ping it with some signal and up comes the float to be recovered.

no idea how cheaply (or reliably) you could do such a thing, but might be nice

There's probably a high tech way but to quote from this there may be a less sophisticated means by which a gas cannister could be fired to inflate a float:

Finding a suitable substance for the pellet was difficult and expert advice was called in, but failed to find an answer: the time taken for the tested materials to dissolve was too variable. The problem was solved when aniseed balls belonging to one of Clarke's children were tried. The manufacturers, Barratt, could not supply the balls with the necessary holes, so Macrae resorted to drilling them through. The delay device had to be protected from water until the limpet mine was actually in position and for this the delay device would be stored in a condom until it was deployed.

There seems to be an awful lot of "pots" appearing very close to the main channel in and out of Southampton near to Warsash.
Some are bearly noticeable and hard to see. Imagine operating during darkness and hitting one!
I'm all for commercial and non commercial pots and fishing but come on guys lets make your drums/floats easier to see. :-)
