Engine cowling repaint

Hi

I have a 2006 Yamaha 2 stroke 75hp which I want to get the cowling painted on.

Overall the paint isn't in bad condition but there are some large chips in places, deep scratches and some decals missing.

Have been quoted £250 to prep, paint, replace decals and lacquer - which seems reasonable to me. The guy who has quoted has done work on cars for me in the past which I've been really happy with, so sure it will be good.

Just wandered if anyone else had had a quote for this recently and how it compared?

Also don't know RAL colour - wandered if it is marked on engine anywhere?

Thanks

Hartley

£250 is probably okay if it's genuine Yamaha decals and not Ebay copies. I know when I looked at doing my Tohatsu, then the genuine decals were over £90 alone, and that's going back a few years. I ended up getting a replacement cowl as one came up at a decent price.

If there's scratches on the cowl, then that needs to be sanded back, build-up primer, sand again, undercoat, base colour then a few coats of clear lacquer. You can see why it gets expensive.

Also - very difficult to do this with rattle cans compared to spray gun and the right facilities.

More details here on paint codes, just double-check with a main dealer to confirm. https://blog.simyamaha.com/yamaha-paint-codes/

There's a 75hp cowl here (missing the end locking bracket)

Thanks for the link re paint colour; very helpful. Will have a look this evening and see if can find the sticker with the code.

I think the Ebay cowl would probably need painting as well, so probably stick with mine.

As someone who is fully setup to paint their own stuff and wouldn't hesitate to do the whole job.. £250 quid is cheap.

By the time out take off the VAT you're at just over £200.. £50 for the decals? £25 for the paint..

He'll have to disassemble it and paint the top bit separately.. more hassle...

Yep tell him to get on with it

Thanks. Agreed - thought it sounded pretty reasonable & know from previous work he does a good job. Just a sanity check really. Will ask him to get going

Over winter i had the 2 pieces of lower cowling painted, from my Mercury 225 Optimax. The cowls are quite big and i had my local car body shop independent guy paint them, Mercury gloss black, with a Matt white inside.

No Decals, but was £400.
