Been a bit quiet on the refurb recently got bogged down with a roof rebuild on part of the house, I put the engine on the back burner when I got the boat back to concentrate on the tube work. Been slowly plodding on with the tube cladding & got the seat frames & a frame back from powdercoating & the upholstery back from the trimmers, the boat is starting to look like it should now, still another row of cladding below the bow & the lower fairlead to go on but almost there with the tubes now.

Managed to put a few hours into the engine, new oil pump fitted & head back on & cam going back in although it's a reasonably simple engine the head takes a bit of reassembly, 24 valves to lap in & 48 valve collets to fiddle back onto the valve stems then you need 6 hands to drop the cam carriers & rockers into position

Good to see your making progress Ken, albeit slow (I know how it feels when other jobs take priority!)
When are you hoping to get it back on the water?

If it was easy, anyone could do it

It's quite satisfying seeing it going back together I'm going to give it a good clean up & paint before its fully assembled, the factory paint is awful on them so hopefully I can do better than yanmar did. I've installed a few new ones that had rust on them fresh out of the shipping crate, they suffer badly with rust in ribs & I detest rusty stains in the bilge.

I wondered if (hoped) you were going to paint the block but didn't quite like to ask. Is the silver I can see the original colour?
We did a fair bit with old Land Rovers in one of my past lives and I always thought the engines once fettled looked good in the MOD recon green/blue. Always liked the look of a refurbed nicely painted engine with the contrast of cleaned up alloy components.

Thers not much left of the original yanmar metallic grey which is the colour I'm going to use, the silver you see is the new oil pump which comes as the complete front timing housing. Unfortunately bare aluminium parts don't stand up too well in the engine bay of a rib so it's just going to be all one colour, planning on painting all the external components & block/ head assembly before I fully assemble it so I can get all around everything then assemble the engine & put a final coat over everything so all the bolt heads etc are sealed too.
This is a yamaha engine Which is the same toyota block that I did for my pal earlier in the year, not as far stripped as mine but still looked good once assembled.

I must say you'd be pleased to lift the hatch and see that. Looks a bit more mean than the plodder engines we had on family boats, usually green, blue or red.

^ What they said.
My mind's eye can now see this RIB hopping a couple of waves as it rounds a headland and slices into a remote calm bay with a white sand beach at the back of it.

Looking better in the proper colour than the etch primer
No shine yet as only basecoat on, will laquer it once assembled so the bits you see are shiny

Only me to blame if it self destructs, been done from bare block & everything checked or renewed along the way but we're all human & shit happens first few trips after a major rebuild are always a bit apprehensive.
Hopefully we get wilks vision of jumping a few waves & sailing into a sandy bay & not sat with my head down in the engine bay covered in oil & stinking of diesel🤣🤣🤣🤣
