Day trips from Salcombe

We quite often base ourselves at Salcombe for boating holidays

We have a 5.5m Xpro rib and we would like to explore a bit further a field on day trips. Does anyone have any suggestions of interesting/ scenic places to visit where there is visitor berthing/ jetty facilities to get ashore to grab some lunch and may be even a cheeky beer?

River Yealm is within reach. Get there at near high tide and pop round to The Ship Inn. On a rising spring tide you have a couple of hours at the pubs quay. Lovely location and food.

Brave the Start Race and head for Dartmouth / Brixham.

oh and try Devonport in Plymouth - keep a safe distance from the Navy boats but worthwhile having an explore up there and the Tamar!

I'm not aware of anything too nasty Plymouth side so jump in and see how far you get. Plymouth has Bovisands Fort for a burger and coffee, you can call into one of the marinas and walk into town or use the facilities there.

The Tamar has some great pubs but not sure what effect the tide has and how far up you can get at low water.

You should be able to get over to Looe as well, 14nm from Plymouth (ish) with Plymouth being 24 ish from you. This link will give you some distances you can then work out where to go

Taking Cariboo down to that neck of the woods in July. Mrs NSS and I have rented a cottage near Kingston for a week so I'm also interested in suggestions for this area, particularly best options for launching.

There are various old small slips that I've seen driving around that end but none that I've ever used.

A quick google search brings up Salcombe and Newton Ferris.

You may be as well to see if there is a boat yard that will host for the week?

No, Kingston. It's a small village just East of the Erme Estuary.

Yep, that thought had occurred to me, particularly as the approach lanes to the cottage appear VERY narrow.

Anyone know of a friendly boatyard between Salcombe and Newton Ferrers?

Only ever sailed around that area rather than RIB'ing, but there are some lovely places.

We really enjoyed taking the yacht up to Kingsbridge at the top of Salcombe - a really scenic journey. There's a visitor pontoon up there you can tie up on and go ashore.

Another vote for Newton Ferrers/Noss Mayo - a beautiful place. You can tie up at the pub over high water, or suppose you could drop people off at the dinghy pontoon, moor the RIB on one of the unconnected visitor pontoons, and then just a short swim ashore. Phone signal around the area is dreadful though!

Dartmouth is good, but again think most of the visitor pontoons are unconnected and require a dinghy, unless you want to go into the marina. Possibly there's a water taxi.

Depending on how far you want to go, then Torquay has good facilities, but not as picturesque as the others. And I've always wanted to stop in Looe or Polperro, but never quite had the right tides to be able to visit there.

Lived in the area for 5 years. Don't know of any pubs on the Tamar that you will easily get too. Those that did have slip / pontoon removed them (God knows why) so you'll be planning on high water to get alongside. If your in a yacht club with reciprocal arrangements there are a couple of clubs with pontoons you could tie up to and use their facilities.

Plymouth Yacht Haven has a very nice bistro / restaurant with a few pubs within 5 minutes walking distance.

QAB has a reasonable bar which serves reasonable food.

Mayflower marina has a a typical marina bistro which is quite good.

Sutton Harbour is virtually in the town and has easy access. Plenty of harbour side bars / bistro's and restaurants to chose from.

If the weather is good and you fancy a long trip out Fowey is definitely worth a visit. Lovely Cornish fishing village and is a smaller version of Dartmouth. Good access and temporary visitor mooring.

Going the other way to Salcombe, Dartmouth definitely worth a visit. Ride the flood up to Totnes is worthwhile, stopping off at Dittisham on the way.

Mant thanks for all of your suggestions. We will check them out over the course of this year, starting at Easter if the weather is reasonable- spring rather than winter would help!

Im sure i have seen your rib around salcombe. Black tubes with A frame?? Was admiring the same x pro last summer????

Quite possibly, we are generally down for all main school holidays inc. 2 weeks in August. Certainly spoken to a few interested people about our rib. We had a dark grey tube version which we couldn't resist the temptation to part-x/ upgrade in October and so now we have a red hypallon tube version. Please come and say hello if you see us again this year, after all you probably will!

If you need any advice about ribs and the Salcombe area we are happy top help. We are an RYA powerboat training center and regularly run up to Dartmouth on rib trips. If anyone is not feeling confident we also run guided trips as we all and go as group.
