Comms

Does anyone have experience with bluetooth person to person comms. As you all appreciate engine noise can be an issue for chatting.
Cheers RoyP

I personally can't envisage a situation on a RIB where this would be necessary. I'm sure there must be motorbike kit out there but why?

Motorbike intercom would be my immediate thought.

https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/ have quite a good selection.

Where would they be useful? If you wanted to wear earplugs to reduce ambient noise, having an in ear intercom would still allow conversation and radio comms (possibly).

High speed and loud engines renders voice comms impossible, particularly when wind noise comes into play.

I did a bit of a survey on this subject a few years ago.
At that time the technology was not what it is now, but........the best solution at that time was motor-cycle equipment.
The problem I found using it, was that the wind noise in one set was loud enough to trick the system into believing it was transmitting-although it was not! This obviously confuses the two sets, one thinking it IS transmitting whereas the other is actually is.
Motor cycle gear was obviously meant for fully-closed motor helmets where the user was effectively "indoors", whereas rib helmets, either full or half faced are not fully closed.
So I decided to shout occasionally instead!

Of course, it helps to have a nice quiet diesel.

Have a mate with a cobra handheld with same functions works ok but when underway may struggle nice idea and ideal if you need to answer the phone and keep phone dry but can’t help thinking a decent Bluetooth headset would be just as good?

As for comms there are some specific watersports units BBtalkin are supposed to be great.....

How many people do you need to come with ? All on sale vessel? How far apart?

https://www.moonraker.eu/yaesu-ssm-64a-vox-headset
Use with a standard handheld vhf or pmr or combined vhf pmr.... http://www.standardhorizon.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=178_174&products_id=100033

The comms issue was just a thought and for the many reasons that you have all mentioned, which I thankyou for your replies. Ambient noise isnt too bad, but raised voices are need to chat to those onboard. I have looked at bike comms, which do seem to be the way to go, but I dont need skid lids so mounting the stuff will be problematic.

Thanks for you input.

Was going to start a new post for "Best thing you have bought for boating 2019 " but mine fits perfect into this post .
https://aftershokz.co.uk/products/xt...xoCaJkQAvD_BwE
bought a pair of bone transmitting blue tooth headphones ,mine were spashproof but link is swimmable in ,solved a big issue for me ,now put my phone in waterproof bag ,and bluetooth everthing to the headphones ,also has last number redial so can ring other boats in party and use some free minutes as i have no vhf liscence , absolute super as both talk and hear is via your jaw bone vibration so doesnt seem to be affected by wind ,and holds onto your ears with virtually no risk of falling off
Brilliant ,best ancillary thing i have bought in 2019

Not sure about the rnli but I know first hand some of the independent lifeboats use helmet Comms - also think you'll find a lot of the P1 and marathon power boats crews run personal comms.

And if your worried about wind noise and loud engines - this is exactly why small aircraft / helicopters use personal comm sets

I got this Cobra Hand Held floatable Blutooth Marine radio
https://www.amazon.com/product-reviews/B00DGFJU3E
for my Zodiac 3.8m.Mk2 Classic.
I live near 3 bars and hear the bar crossings on Manukau Waikato and Raglan hRarbours, daily tidal in and outs, and when underway the phone can be in a dry secure area and you can your Cobra from it.
That is, when I can figure it out.
Seasons greetings.

Figured out syncing to bluetooth.
It wouldn't ring in set up bluetooth mode as you had to go to a working channel for it to over ride.
Many thanks to brother in law for phoning me 71 times before it worked.
As per the comments in the amazon link, it lacks volume, to converse it would engine to idle and quiet on deck.
