Club Members?

Whilst wasting the day at work thinking about boating rather than shipping stuff about, i was thinking....

How many people here are members of a formal boat club? What benefits do you receive from that membership? Do you have any say in what happens when?

Is there a need / want for a club specific to ribs or like minded people? Part of this stems from the Solent ribsters monthy meet at a local pub but there is another reason behind my questions which may become clear later.

Appreciate your thoughts and comments on this.

Thanks
Howard.

I am aware of the BIBOA and the good work the do but because there is a Royal Southampton Yacht Club it doesnt mean there cant be other yacht clubs in the area?

Apreciate this may be stepping on the toes of Ribnet so please feel free to remove this thread if you wish.

All im enquiring about is some form or organisation to a group of people who are already meeting. From this opportunities could arise to add to everyones boating experience. organised events, shared use of facilities and the like.

There is also Pathfinder who combine hard and soft boats. I was a member a few years ago and found them to be very friendly and they organise the best Night exercise ever.

I am a member of Hythe Sailing Club for my sailing boat, dont really get involved these days though as they are not really Rib friendly ie they dont like fast pdv,s on trailers, unless they are rescue boats or tenders.
I have joined Calshot but there isnt a social section as far as I am aware, its just membership to use the slipway/parking etc.

Hi all

The Solent meet is the SECOND Monday of each month, but is a very informal affair which appears to work without any commitment from anyone.
Although its land based there are often Mini-cruises organised on the night for a later date, and it gives everyone the oppertunity to meet a few like-minded people.

So am I - however I will probably let my full membership lapse this year since I've sold the sailing boat. It would be usefull to be a member of some sort of RYA recognised club to take advantage of other clubs facilities and sign in legitimately . Not too interested in social sections as I'm generally an antisocial git.

Cheers

Phil

I'm a member at ECA - providing clubhouse with good facilities, winch launching, tractors to move the boats, workshops, good bar with lunchtime food, cheap boat storage.

I belong to Guernsey Yacht Club, mainly for the bar!

Trouble is there's a silly cow behind the bar that has it in for one of my mates girlfriends.......so tend not to go there too much now which is a shame. I should really complain to the management.

The facilities are good but it's a bit yachty and they tend not to like the motor boat lot. Until we come and pick them up coz there too pissed on gin to make it home!

They also do good evening courses in the winter.

My problem - one of many - is that Monday nights do not usually work. How about a meet to the WEST of Southampton water?

Absolutely. From your post I wasn't sure whether you knew about BIBOA, and wondered whether it might meet your needs though. Shame to reinvent the wheel if it's not necessary!

There's no problem at all -- discussion like this is exactly what these forums are for

Maybe we should form an official RIBnet club and have it affiliated to the RYA -- anyone know anything about the amount of bureaucracy involved in this sort of thing?

We could certainly try to build up the number of regular social meets, as these seem to have beeen very successful so far.

John

OK. It's got to be worth at least finding out what might be involved

I will start a thread to gauge interest and start talking to the RYA e.t.c next week.
