Cleaning off excess adheasive

I've recently had a leak from an old patch on the rear cone of my Bombard Explorer 5m - I kind of ignored it to start with as it was on the drive and it got worse to the point where it was loosing all air within about 20 minutes of pumping up that tube.

I finally got around to taking the patch off and making it good. I now have no air leak which I'm happy with. However, I got a bit reckless with the adhesive and there is some unsightly overrun I'd like to remove.

I went to Force4 to look for Polly Marine 2903 Solvent which they didn't have any but the chap was sure that acetone would do the job just as well so I bought some. Now, it seems fine on wet adhesive but not much impact on dried adhesive (I'm using two part Poly Marine 3026).

What is the best technique to removing dried adhesive with acetone?
