Cheap And Cheerful VHF

Any ideas? My cousin has been ribbing for about a year without one and I have persuaded him that it is not a great idea to rely on a mobile phone. Only shore hugging/trips to beaches, will prob/hopefully never be used, only in emergencies. Any advice I could pass on to him would be great,Thanks.

I'd go for a bottom end Standard Horizon as a good compromise between cost and quality ...

Anything from Standard Horizon would be good. Not too expensive and good quality.

Avoid anything from Cobra. It's cheap, but generally a false economy.

Not knowing what boat he / she has, if your friend has nowhere to put a fixed VHF / and it's aeriel, a handheld could also work.

Oldschool handhelds used to sit nicely in the winch handle holders for yachts, which can be screwed to the transom and are cheap. I can think of three dinghy clubs used that idea on their rescue boats.
