Looks like they've changed their line up slightly...ours was called the 'Safety' helmet then but now looks more like the 'Kitesurf Safety' ... I think the only difference is the 'Kitesurf' has removable/adjustable ear protection if you need easier comms with others, whereas the 'Safety' has integral moulded ear protection

Won't that chinstrap snap your neck if it buckets?

No idea. They're designed as watersport helmets so I'm assuming on balance of probilities that they're a positive contribution for most scenarios. They keep the rain and wind off too :-)

As my necks buggered in the first place I doubt I'd notice anyway :-(

But are they designed for high speed impact, or are they just tested for relative low speed impact - like swift water rescue or wind surfing etc..,

That was what I was thinking. There's a reason Geckos don't have straps.

Again, no idea. In truth, we didn't buy them for going over protection even though I know there's a risk - that balance of probabilities thing again. The crew wanted protection from rain, cold and wind and were very clear they didn't want either the industrial look or the Star Wars look.

Maybe I've missed a trick somewhere but the Gecko's seem to have straps too:

"Strap Assembly (Marine Gecko Safety Headgear): This retention system consists of 19mm nylon webbing riveted to the shell at two point fixings. The Patented Fastex 'click' closure buckle allows one hand release and quick adjustment to the strap length. Offset side buckle aids access in emergency and prevents contact with windpipe. Looped end aids tensioning and neoprene sheathed comfort tube helps prevent rubbing"

Damn, I should have seen that before. I always thought they didn't have them.

My own helmet that I use doesn't have one, but it's not a Gecko.

We have two of the new Gecko's in white, they have in inflatable head linings and a chin straps. The ear pieces are removable and you can add accessories like radios or torch/camera holders.

We bought the £99 seconds helmets with full face visors from ebay and they are great. A couple of weeks ago we travelled to the Isle of Wight in a force 8 and it was loads of fun as we were getting loads of waves in the boat but stayed bone dry and warm.

I cannot recommend them enough, here is a quick video of our trip:

I was under the impression Gecko's had quick release - sort oftension release straps so the helmet pops off when neck snapping pressure is exerted...

Beautiful video, what camera?

The strap is riveted on and it has a red quick release clip. The helmet is equipped with an inflatable head liner which takes up any gap between your head and the helmet, so if you were to enter the water at speed then the visor would simply pop off and no water should enter between your head and the helmet so in my opinion you shouldn't get the bucket effect

The RNLI use these helmets and I trust their judgement...

The camera was a Gopro Hero 2

Nothing beats a gecko. The only problem I found is, like whisper said, the visor is designed to come off on impact with the water... so if you strap the helmet on to your jockey seat and it gets a little rough, you will never see that visor again

Gecko do a padded helmet bag for about £10 that will sort this issue out for you as there is nothing worse than a smack in the helmet
