Campsites with Launching/Overnighting

Would like to do a few extended coastal trips this year, & quite like the idea of camping along the way perhaps Cornwall/Devon area though tempted with a Scotland trip too. 3-4 nights type thing.


So looking for campsites on the coast with moorings or safe anchorage that might be suitable, what can you guys suggest or recommend anywhere in particular?

There are lots of campsites around with sea access, but most of them simply have launching over the beach or basic slipway and no access to moorings.

There are 2 exceptions that I know of.

Riverside Holidays , Hamble Campsites, Hampshire

Riverside Campsite is situated next to the car park for Mercury Yacht Haven on the Hamble. All facilities including visitor berths and slipway.

Penmarlam Caravan and Camping Park, Fowey, Cornwall - Caravan and Tent Holidays

Opposite Fowey, it has direct access to pontoons and slipway down a steep 500m path.

Your other option (and one we use) is to find the mooring 1st and then look for close campsites, however most of these seem to be a taxi ride away.

Penmarlem is probably the slickest operation in Cornwall.
However, around here (Falmouth Bay) it is possibly to take a nice mooring/berth for a week and camp very close to it. A berth/camp operation around these parts is not available.

To many places in Scotland to mention ..so best choose an area then ask whats available in that area.

I did Resipole campsite last year and can recommend it. It has its own slipway..you can hire a mooring too..though I just launched and recovered off the slipway every day as its not busy.

The campsite is on Loch Sunnart..a 19mile long sea loch which is sheltered. No major tide flows to worry about. It has great sea fishing and you can have a go at trying to catch a common skate..up to 200lb as they are in the loch in the deeper sandy bottom parts.

From Loch Sunnart..you can easily visit Tomermory and Mull..or go round the Ardnamuchan Point..which is the most westerly point on mainland uk..

Scenery is remote and breathtaking..only drawback is the Scottish Midge..they can eat you alive on a calm night

Yeah, just a shame that no one wants to go there 'coz its cold, wet and infested with midges/Scottish people.

Naw..I guess its a while since you were in Scotland Mollers.. the sensible Scots emigrated to Canada and New Zealand years ago.. its infested with English now ..why do you think they want Independance

Likewise in Devon. Better to take a temp mooring (plenty of overnights available) and camp or b&b locally.

+1 we had a brilliant weeks holiday staying at Resipole a couple of years back, excellent cruising to Tomermory etc, well worth the trip up

Well a Scotland trip is definitely on the list maybe post midge season! Though I'm guessing the west coast is not too bad?

Cornwall is fairly handy for me, as I'm N Dorset. I know my way round many of the windsurfing spots & generally plan take the boat, if its windy windsurf if its not take the boat out.

Rock & Lundy would be a nice area to explore subject to weather, know of a decent campsite just up the road from Daymer Bay, my fave windsurfing spot.

We have a number of camp sites around Bude - one of our favorite is Camping | Caravan | Devon - Noteworthy Caravan & Camping, Devon

Not a lot as far as facilities go but a great friendly site that is rib and pet friendly, kids play area and toilets etc.

You can then launch at Bude, tidal but a lovely run up to Lundy, plenty to see around Bude, Boscastle etc.

Port Gaverne has a camp / caravan site and a good beach launch at all tides - if you have a 4x4 or like pushing. Lundy will eb a fair run but Rock, Padstow become easy runs.

If the weather is grim Plymouth and all the options there is an hour away.

Other options are Porthkerris - they will launch you and can provide a bunk house and camping - Self Catering Accommodation & Camping at Porthkerris -

Pentewan Sands can also launch accross teh beach and has some well known accommodation options - Pentewan Sands Holiday Park - Caravan Holidays - Camping Cornwall

Being nosy which bit of North Dorset? I used to live Sherborne.
