Bye Bye Rib & New Engine

Sold the rib today. Figure I'm not going to have much time to use it for the next couple of years and it was starting to need a few jobs doing - so decided to move it on! Boo - we had lots of great fun in it. But Yay - no more expensive bills!

I am however looking for a new aux motor for the hardboat. Does anyone have experience of the tohatsu 6hp sail pro motors, with the high thrust prop?

Finally - cheapest will be cambridge or bursledon outboards. I know there was "history" many years ago - has anyone had any recent purchase experience of any engine from them?

Anything based in Soham Cambridgeshire, there’s more than one company name.

He's also involved in Bursledon these days, even though it's nowhere near Cambridge! : https://find-and-update.company-info...37830/officers

For our sailing club I've bought several boats/engines in the last 2 years from Laurence at Barnet Marine/XS Ribs - always worth giving him a call to see what price he can do, and my experience of his service has been exemplary.

Thanks all. I'll see if I can find a reasonable deal from a "preferred" dealer.

Will post more once I've got it - but think I've found a local dealer that can supply.

One thing I'm really liking is that the high-thrust version is super easy to get - it's the same gearbox, unlike the old "big foot" motors, just a bigger blade prop with less pitch, of which there seems to be plenty of availability.

On the hardboat, with my old 5hp Johnson 2-stroke at WOT, I'd really only get 3.5 knots. So I let that go with the rib, deciding was time for an upgrade.

I spent ages looking for a 9.8hp Tohatsu 2-stroke, but everything I've read suggests that the 6hp with high thrust prop should give me pretty much as much thrust as the 9.8hp with the standard prop. And of course, even though only an aux, I do want to be able to "make progress" if I need it.
Only issue is it's still single cylinder, would have liked a nice smooth twin, but that's not to be these days. And a lecky aux is a stupid idea.

Anyway, I'll report back once I've got it.

New engine is now in my hands. Purchased from Kevin@Pacer Marine as they're local to me and a super friendly bunch. He had one in stock ready to go, I went for a standard long-shaft + high thrust prop in the end rather than the sail pro - I just don't think the charging circuit would have been useful and not going down that path saved a few £ too.

FWIW I also made a few calls regarding Cambridge Outboards etc to some friends that have knowledge of the industry. Let's just say leopards don't change their spots and I'm glad I didn't hit "buy now" with them!

Not run the motor yet, waiting for a new "test tank" to arrive, aka a 120 litre wheelie bin.
