Buy rib for south of france

I have a friend who is interested in buying a rib for the south of france. Waterskiing island hopping etc with 6 to 8 people.

What make would anyone recommend, a foreign manufacturer? Buy UK

What kind of qualification would he need in that area?

Thanks
Simon

Can you give us some more info regarding his boat-buying, e.g. budget, fuel preference. Some of this may require some research in the south of France, e.g. fuel availabilty, local engine service centres.

Regarding qualifications, if he lives in France I believe there is a system of compulsory testing depending on the engine size. Alternatively, he could obtain his ICC (International Certificate of Competency) in Britain by taking his Powerboat Level 2 or above. More info on this can be found on the RYA site.

In France it has to be a Zodiac try these links

The fashion conscious French will appreciate the the blue and white Livery unlike British Ribbers who take the P*** out the Medline upholstery

I think for french water ways -even those which are not inland you need your CEVNI.
To be honest I am not entirely sure what it stands for but I know you need it! Hopefully someone who knows what they are tlking about can shed some light on it!

CEVNI is only needed for inland waterways in Europe. It stands for 'Code Europeen des Voies de la Navigation Interieure'. You need to buy the little book 'The RYA Book of EuroRegs for Inland Waterways', study it, then take the test. It is quite straightforward - multiple choice, around 14 questions. I took mine during the lunch break on the second day of the PB2 course. I had to request it as an 'add-on' to the course.

He will indeed! There's no doubt that MeMe and his French RIB add a certain 'je ne sais quoi' to the forum

Main difference between a RIB for the UK and Med is deck layout. You'll probrably spend more time anchored than in the UK and hence want a sunbathing area, bathing ladder, shower and bimini (sunshade). In all my years of ribbing in the Solent I never needed any of these!

Medlines are popular but I'd imagine any UK manufacturer would give you the option of this sort of fit. I personally don't like the fitted bow anchor roller which some 'med styles' have. It makes bows to the quay more difficult and is in my view uneccesary for a small anchor on rope & chain.

ICC is a good idea but not compulsory on a UK registered boat. Registration docs (SSR) proof of ownership and insurance must all be carried at all times.

All the best to you Rouguey!
