Boating from Trafalgar wharf

Hi guys,

We've bought a new Ballistic 5.5m rib from JBT marine and will be taking ownership in the next few weeks. They have offered us 1 month in the drystack to see what the benefits of drystacking is like but after that we'll most likely be trailering it in around the Solent and Poole.

I've not boated around Portsmouth way before, usually more Hamble/Lymington way.

Whilst we break the engine in, are there any recommendations where to go from Trafalgar wharf?

Cheers

Chichester Harbour is nearby and very pretty if you are looking a sedate day out. Catch the rip in the harbour mouth at the wrong time and it gets a bit exciting! West wittering beach is lovely. Langstone harbour is nearer and has seal colonies but can be very shallow, still a good spot to visit though.

A run round to Sandown Bay can be nice- if you swim ashore/ take a dinghy you can go to the driftwood beach bar which is pretty good. Just watch out for Bembridge ledge as it gets v shallow - all nicely marked with a cardinal marking the Eastern edge.

The solent forts are interesting to go take a look at and have good mackerel fishing in summer.

If you want to try out the boats seakeeping abilities a bit you can head out to the nab tower.

Classic round IOW trip can be great - you could go clockwise round and get lunch in Yarmouth.

Brighton is a good run.

While you're down the other end of the Solent, Chichester harbour is well worth exploring. At low tide, there are grey and harbour seals most easily seen from the Emsworth channel west of Thorney Island - we counted 38 on 1 visit. Obviously keep you distance.

Good lunch stops include Sparkes and Northney marinas on Hayling Island and when the tide's in, the Anchor Bleu in Bosham, Chichester Yacht Basin or if the tide's right in, the Crown and Anchor at Dell Quay.

If you go around Hayling and out through Langstone, watch your speed a bit through Langstone Harbour - the harbour master happily ignores jet skis right in front of his office but loves to watch ribs doing 15 knots 2 miles from any other boats through his telescope!
