Boat Security

Anyone any ideas how to stop swimmers from boarding and diving off a moored rib. Some seem to think that the transducer is a step to get in. any ideas including cameras or alarm .

A cover would deter them.

Trouble is Nash, what's he going to do with the cover when he gets out to the boat?

Maybe a floating cage made of plastic water pipe and chicken wire.

Leave the cage attached to the mooring when you go out and float it over the top when you return.

Fold/Roll it up and put it in a seat pod or console would be my guess.

The Ducks Back cover on my 6.5M boat rolls up to about the size of a couple of buoyancy aids, so not huge.

I still think my idea's better tho

For a cover to roll up that small it would have to be thin material and of course I am thinking of a cover that we would have to use where there is sunshine 40 deg +.

Plus would a cover deter people, or would they simply walk on the cover?

I had a look at where you live, I thought it might have been Nashville.

40+ deg on the Atlantic coast of Ireland???

Bought a cheapie lightweight cover from ebay as a temp for my 17' dory on its trailer.

The high side rails meant I needed one of the pontoon boat style.
Less than £19 delivered.

Yes, they are thin & do flap a bit but surprisingly tough.
The edge is elasticated.

Couple of extra ratchet straps over it to help during Dudley, Eunice & Franklin & it's fine - which is more than I can say for several of the neighbours fence panels just up from it!

In its bag it takes up less room than a 12 litre bucket.
This type (mine's in black): https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284627584979

Don't know whether that sort of thing would be worth a try?

there's a local loch here where the local sailing club and the university sailing club both have ribs moored. in the height of summer the "yoofs" will swim out to the one without a cover on it and ignore the one with a cover (I think the uni use theirs less so cover it) - I think its probably much harder to climb on board with a cover stopping you grabbing the seats etc. No idea if it would discourage them if there was only 1 to pick from.

If the priority is to stop them using the transducer as a step can you engineer something on top of it that would make it very unpleasant to stand on (probably barefoot)?

Problem with alarms would be the triggering method.
Motion sensor would be going off with wave motion.
Infra red movement would be set off by seagulls landing on it.

If you have sight of the boat would a remotely activated siren be feasible? Is there something that could be set off by a phone app on the market?

A few of those pigeon/seagull deterrent spikes stuck on top of the transducer?

IMO, the last thing you want to do is piss anyone off - after all, it's an unattended inflatable boat. I also suspect that they're not breaking any laws. How is your insurance fixed if a child cuts a foot on a seagull strip?

My response levels would be:
  • Move a mooring or two out
  • Cover the transducer with a guard
  • Fit a shoots through-hull transducer

How about a simple sign on the transom saying please do not climb on your boat.

That's an invitation on a gilt card round these parts.

Pop a 'Made in China' sticker on the transom, that would deter most people................................. .............................

If they are grown ups and drive to the location, find their car and get a few mates and yourself to climb on the roof and jump off like they are!!!!...make sure you climb up the mirrors to make up for the transducer replacement.

No but really if you approached them and explained that scenario Ive just mentioned to them, they might be good enough to stop doing it. If not razor wire!!!
