Are RIBEYE any good - Page 2

I bought an "old boat" ... "old engine"
but because the hull and grp was in such good shape thought it was worth the punt. Flogged the 1987 Evinrude on Ebay for a surprising amount, retubed from Humber for a not surprising amount (although v happy with the job) and a new Tohatsu Motor. It now stands me about 2K over his budget, but compared to 20 / 24K for an all new boat, am happy with the set up. The boat feels "new" to me, has history and new tubes and new motor all with guarantees.
I have never owned or been in a Ribeye. My judgement is coloured somewhat, due to the fact that whenever I have been on holiday in Devon and Cornwall, the people acting like complete idiots always seem to be in a Ribeye ... specifically the yachtie types overloading the boat and speeding through moorings, having children ride standing on the tubes hanging onto the A frame... etc etc . Not saying all Ribeye owners are like that ...but

If you are going to be spending most of your time out to sea at the mouth of The Camel just make sure you choose a rib with a good hull for rough choppy seas, seeing as 90% of your time will be spent out in these conditions

Great little boat, IMO. From new 2005.

Good;
Rear splashwell, great for beaching with following waves, also for reversing back into waves away from beach. Keeps the boat quite dry.
100 Yamaha 4 stroke. (£15 in fuel, 2010 Itchen Bridge to Cowes and back, with no messing about on the way!)
Not to much weight for towing and launching.
Kids love it as not many sharp bits to catch them out!
May just about get back, half of what I paid for it.

Bad;
Apart from engine service each 100 hrs, only had replacement steering cable £98 + labour.
Sticking brakes on trailer, cable operated, disc pads stick however much you wash/grease/jack up on blocks etc.
Always defending the PVC tubes on internet sites. But 6 years on, wipe over with TFR and cleans up a treat. Although it does take off the wearing patch's. Good two part PVC glue sorts that one out.
A bit under weight in larger waves. But still performs safely enough when it gets a bit spicy.
Not the 4x4 of the sea.
Plastic vinyl jockey seat covers brittle from sun and my excessive use of TFR.

It seems quite a good compromise, Ford Mondeo of the sea, as some other poster said. After 6 years, still looking quite modern and wife/kids friendly.

Just to let you know, Ribeye now offer a 5 year extended warranty subject to annual inspection/servicing at an authorised Ribeye Sales Centre. Enjoy your boating!

We (Onboard) run two new Ribeyes - 785s - out of Gunwharf Quays and they are proving to be excellent boats even for commercial use. The Yamaha 250's are first class and relatively economical too. My best run ever on an economy run from Gunwharf to Cowes Yacht haven was 8 litres against a sea and 20 knot headwind albeit with an empty boat.

We have had them out in all conditions for a couple of months now frequently fully loaded and they perform brilliantly and handled some tough conditions already at times. Handling is first class watch outside Portsmouth Harbour on the weekend to check that aspect out.

We also use a few other Ribeyes and even a three year old charter one looks almost like new and performs well also with a 250 on it.

Very old boats used to have a bit of a build issue but that is long since been overcome.

I have driven many different types of Ribs over the years and put the Ribeyes at the top of the tree for anything other than North Sea oil field work :-)

What people get second hand of course is always open to a degree of risk. As to whether or not Ribeyes are good boats then the short answer is yes!

I agree with Paul at Powerboats. Are Ribeye any good? In a word, yes! I am pleased with mine, pleased I bought it and really impressed with it's performance and economy.

Ribeye ribs are ideal as hire/charter boats and suit a certain sector of the market, but let's not get carried away.

I wouldn't waste my money on a ribeye, there's much better boats out there. The build quality is really iffy and they can't handle rough weather. I saw one in a magazine once.

I wrote and deleted several replies Cookee. Timw craves a reaction and thus a bit of attention.

He couldn't give a toss for Ribeye ribs in truth' or any other brand.
