Temporary Repair - "Carbon" pvc

For a number of years I've always had a roll of Duck tape or Gorilla Tape in my kit bag when I go out on the water as a just in case temporary repair.

Today I was fixing a template in place on my sib with Duck Tape and it's obvious that Duck Tape/Gorilla Tape doesn't stick down as well on the "carbon fibre" look pvc as it did on smooth pvc, and it would be useless as a temporary/ get me home repair.

Has anyone used a different tape that sticks better? or what other emergency repair solutions are available?

Geoff used to recommend this stuff: Linky

I always carried a Clamshell repair - only works in certain circumstances, but likely to deal with a small puncture picked up in the course of a day afloat, such as coming alongside dock or hitting a sharp object.

I ALSO carried a small volume of thinners to clean up fabric before a patch, my experience was the same as your's, after some time in use, the patina that builds up on tubes prevents adhesion.

Ditto here... Tear Aid and Clamshell carried in the dire emergency dry bag. Neither tested to date. A bit of acetone in a small container is a good idea for PVC.

Hi David, I'd cleaned the area with acetone as I was a fixing a Borika mount. I'm convinced it's the texture of the "carbon" pvc which is causing the tape to not adhere properly.
I have used Duck Tape on Redneck (smooth pvc) and it stuck down really well when I had a really small puncture in the bow tube a couple of years ago when I got to close to some barnacles on a rock in Anglesey.
I will try some Tear Aid as I do like the reassurance of having a quick emergency repair to hand.

The Tear Aid arrived and I tried it on the "carbon" PVC.
This isn't an endorsement, however the Duck Tape/Gorilla Tape didn't adhere to the pvc and the Tear Aid did adhere very well to the "carbon" pvc.
I am convinced that the Tear Aid would be very suitable for a temporary/get me home repair and it will now be in my kit bag.

Was it type A or B that you used?
