SIBing to the small isles. Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna

Hello!

has anyone had experience crossing from Arisaig to the small isles?

I quite fancy a a weeks camping and fishing around them in the summer.

I have SIBed around the skerries and various small islands around that area before, but never crossed over the open water to the islands.

I have an excel volante 330 with a 10hp 2stroke outboard, I have a a good few hours experience under my belt built up over 3 years of owning the boat.

I know my post is fairly vague but any info is appreciated.

Thanks
Joe

Have you looked at the Gurnard's posts and videos on Youtube?

Its possible in very good weather - but I wouldn't do it an 3.3 + 10HP unless perhaps with a similarly crazy friend. My contingency plans would include thinking about how to bring the boat back on the ferry if it needed!

unfortunately non of my friends are as daft as I am!

I had thought about bringing my sib on a Calmac ferry and seeing if they would just charge me a car ticket or something.

TBF, it’s only about 6nm from Arisaig to Eigg, not a problem logistically, but it would absolutely depend on the weather & conditions. I’d be going expecting & equipped to stay/camp out. We had a fantastic week last August exploring many of the islands from Mallaig, but we were in RIBs. I wouldn’t shy away from doing it in our 3.8 Volaire given the conditions.

Hi Joe, I think I'd be looking to gain a bit more experience of open sea crossing with others before contemplating doing it on your own.
Highland Haggis has organised Scottish Sib outings in the past, usually leaving Largs to the likes of Bute and Arron, camping out overnight.
I've been on a couple and the experience I gained was invaluable. Not sure if HH has a new Sib/OB (his got stolen last year), if he has I'm sure he will be organising another couple of trips this year.

Take a look towards the end of this thread from '21,one of the guys had a drone and took some decent footage.
