Honwave t38ie

I’ve been offered a Tohatsu 30hp 2stroke for £950 it’s a 2005 and from what I’ve seen on video it’s a good runner. I believe they are around 51kg, would this be too much for a Honwave t38ie? I know with 1 person on board you probably would dare go full throttle but for 4 up and towing a biscuit I’m thinking the extra hp would be a advantage

I can’t remember, is the T38 rated for that power/weight on its transom plate? Also if you are inflating each trip from the back of a van are you sure you want to be moving a 51kg outboard? If yes to both things then ok I guess.

The T38 ie3 is rated at 20hp and 48hp. I wouldn't be to concerned about the extra few kg but the extra power through the transom may cause problems.
However a bigger concern would be insurance. I very much doubt any insurance company would provide cover.
I thought you was hoping to beach launch? Trying to get 51kg across a beach would be very difficult.

With the trolley 51kg won’t be an issue. Launching at high tide a 20M run won’t be a problem

Sounds like you have it sorted.

Assuming the plan is still for a launch off the Littlehampton beach what state of the tide might you return to though? A few hours out could see a return with 250m to pull the trolley up, and perhaps a more unsuitable surface for small trolley wheels and a heavy outboard?

I have one of those Tohatsu's for my 3.6m Zodiac Futura IIc. The Futura is rated for 40 hp. Even so I much prefer to run my Suzuki 20 EFI. The Suzuki is slightly lighter at 48 kg and gives the boat a better balance. It is also much more effecient, quiet, pollutes WAY less and is powerful enough for 3 up. It can do 4 up but just barely.

The Tohatsu handles 4 up fine and is pretty much the most powerful outboard one can call portable. I soundproofed the cowling on mine to make it more bearable. It is a great motor but it is a 2-stroke and I only use it for heavy loads. But 4 up and towing would certainly be too much for any 30 hp outboard. At least I would think so, I haven't actually tried just that.

The older model T38 is rated for 25hp (at least mine is) not sure about the new one they seem to conflict.
